Corr, Chief of Police <br /> <br /> <br /> This policy is an edited version of Middlesex District Attorney’s Office model policy “Standard <br />Operating Procedures Regarding the School Resource Officer Program” for compliance with the <br />Criminal Justice Reform Bill signed into law April 13, 2018. <br /> <br />GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS AND GUIDELINES <br /> <br />Close cooperation and communication between the schools and police and a mutual <br />understanding of and respect for the important role that each plays in connection with <br />our children and youth are essential to the success of the mission of both institutions. <br />Whenever it is necessary for the police to be present on school property, they will <br />conduct themselves according to accepted legal practices, recognizing the <br />responsibility and authority of school officials to manage the school environment, and <br />work with school officials to minimize any impact their actions might have on that <br />environment. <br /> <br />Pursuant to M.G.L. c. 71, § 37P, the Chief of Police of the Lexington Police Department <br />in consultation with the Superintendent of the Lexington Public Schools has <br />established the following Procedures regarding the community’s School Resource <br />Officer (“SRO”) Program. <br /> Procedures <br /> A. Chain of Command for SRO and Collaboration with School <br /> <br />1. The SRO will be supervised and collaborate with school personnel as <br />outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding Between Lexington Public <br />Schools and Lexington Police Department as well as between the <br />Minuteman Career and Technical High School and the Lexington Police <br />Department regarding the School Resource Officer program (“SRO MOU”) <br />sections IV.B. & VI. [44.2.4] <br /> <br />2. The SRO is assigned as a Detective to the Detective Bureau directly <br />supervised by the Lieutenant Detective or a designee. [11.2.1] <br /> <br />3. The number of SROs assigned at any given time will depend on a variety of <br />factors including the need for presence at the schools, budget and staffing <br />restrictions. The Department will prioritize a SRO position when possible.
