4 <br /> Page 188 <br /> November 8, 1976 <br /> Miss Kay Dillmore and Mr. Paul Lombard Co-Directors of the Summer 1976 SUMMER <br /> Reading Program reviewed the report of the summer reading program. They READING PROGR <br /> said the twelfth Lexington summer reading program was held at the Bowman <br /> School for a five week period from July 6 to August 6. The enrollment <br /> was approximately 200 students grades K-6, with the inclusion of 20 METCO <br /> students. Staff numbered 50 persons including 34 classroom teachers, 3 <br /> reading specialists, 3 physical education specialists, and instructional <br /> materials specialist, an L.D. coordinator and a nurse. There were many <br /> high school students and senior citizen volunteers. The summer program <br /> funded under ESEA Title I, was evaluated and rated most successful by <br /> parents, teachers and students. The formal program evaluation was con- <br /> ducted by Morris Kaufman, Northeastern University. A report of the pro- <br /> gram and statistical information was given to the school committee. <br /> It was announced tha the Foreign Language Department of the Lex- INTERNATIONAL <br /> ington Public Schools was sponsoring an international festival on Novem- DAY <br /> ber 13, 1976 at Diamond Junior High School from 11:00-5:00 p.m. The <br /> School Committee members and public were invited to attend this gala <br /> event. <br /> Dr. Lawson said that American Education Week this year was from AMERICAN <br /> November 15-19, and that he had sent an invitation to all citizens of EDUCATION WEE: <br /> Lexington to visit the schools of Lexington, especially during the NOV. 15-19 <br /> American Education Week. He said that the support of the public is <br /> essential and the schools sincerely wanted all citizens to visit and <br /> participate in the school program. <br /> Dr. Lawson said that he and Mr; Maclnnes would be attending a meet- ENERGY <br /> ing at the invitation of the Board of Selectmen regarding energy conser- CONSERVATION <br /> vation in the town. Mr. Maclnnes reviewed a memo that he sends out an- <br /> nually regarding energy conservation in the schools. He said that he <br /> would like to hold dissemination of the memo until after the meeting. <br /> He also wished to point out to the school committee that money was in <br /> the budget for a lighting proposal which would increase the exterior <br /> lighting at the Harrington, Bridge, Fiske and Lexington High School. <br /> He reviewed some of the details of the plan. Dr. Rotberg expressed con- <br /> cern for the aesthetics and Mr. Maclnnes reassured him that this had <br /> been taken into account in the plan. It was the consensus of the school <br /> committee that Mr. Maclnnes continue with the lighting proposal. <br /> Mrs. Swanson asked the members of the committee for approval to draft SCHOOL COMMIT <br /> a letter of support for students seeking money from local organizations REPORTS ROOF <br /> for the roof mural at the high school field house. The consensus of the MURAL <br /> committee was that such a letter of support be written. <br /> The following dates were established for school committee meetings: CALENDAR <br /> November 22, December 13, January 10 and January 24. <br /> It was agreed to take up additional executive minutes at the next EXECUTIVE <br /> school committee meeting. MINUTES <br /> It was <br /> VOTED: to go into Executive Session at 9:55 p,m. for the purpose of dis- <br /> cussing a matter of litigation and negotiation.
