Page 170
August 12, 1975
A regular meeting of the Lexington School Committee came to order at 2:00 p.m.
at the school administration building. Present were Messrs. Brown, Wadsworth, Rotberg
Mesdames Berchtold and Swanson. Alsp present were Messrs. Barnes, Spiris, Maclnnes
and Dr. Fobert.
A review of suggested procedures for the recruitment and selection of a new
superintendent of schools was presented by Dr. Herold Hunt. SEARCH
COMMITTEE
Dr. Fobert reviewed the brochure designed by Mrs. Elizabeth Cuevas
of the Central Office. He discussed the purpose of the brochure and commented
upon_the proposed content. Dr. Rotberg suggested that perhaps a mimeographed
letter would be sufficient. Dr. Hunt recommended a brochure for attraction
purposes, as well as, what he felt was an accepted professional announcement routine.
It was decided that aletter signed by the School Committee Chairman would accompany
the brochure.
The following timetable was suggested:
Mail announcements - 8/25/75
Application deadline 10/1/75
Final candidates interviewed by the
School Committee - 11/1/75
Appointment date - 12/1/75
Effective date - 2/1 75
Dr. Hunt stated that he would work primarily with the School Committee and
would assist the Screening/Selection Committee via the School Committee. After
this step, the Interview Committee will take charge. Dr. Hunt suggested that
five people be chosen for the Selection Committee. The Selection Committee would
return to Dr. Hunt, and he, in turn, would report to the School Committee.
Dr. Rotberg suggested that the School Committee screen applicants with
Dr. Hunt; otherwise, the Committee would abrogate its responsibilities. He felt
the Committee could want to discuss qualifications as applications come in. In
summary, he questioned the present procedures stating that the School Committee
should not assign its responsibilities to a Screening Committee.
Dr. Hunt continued his report stating that it was common practice to bring
the final candidates to the district at the district's expense. He would suggest
a small number of finalists. He also agreed that the School Committee should have
some input in the initial stages of selection rather than to wait until the process
is nearly completed.
Mrs. Berchtold suggested that since the Selection Committee might get 100 or
more names, perhaps a list of 20-30 candidates submitted to the School Committee
would be appropriate. After the School Committee screening, the Interview Committee
would then receive the names.
Dr. Rotberg again stressed that the electorate expected the School Committee
to look at each candidate and not assign its responsibilities to a Screening
Committee.
