May 19, 1975 Pane 130 The --regular meeting of the L�--,ter-tom. School Committee came to order at S:C�O D.M. at Jonas Clarke .Jr. iii:h School.Lexington t were Messrs. Brown, 'otbe-_g, 'Jacan and ;adsworth, Mesdames Berchtold and Swanson. Also present were Messrs. Barnes, Spiris, Dr. onde er, Dr. Fobert and :fncs. Cummings. The minutes of Hay 12, 1975 were Presented to the school committee for its approval. 1r. t-otberg noted that the vote to rescind. the February vote on lETCO students was out of order and quoted a passage from Robert's Rules of Order". 'Mrs. Berchtold felt that the original motion to rescind was not out order, citing school committee Rules and. Regulations, Section 2, D & r?U'1_S "Suspension of Rules". Mr. Rotberg suggested that we place this on the agenda 5/12/75 for further discussion. Mrs. Swanson agreed to pursue the matter with someone with authority on the subject to make sure that the motion was legal. After a brief discussion, it was VOTED: To accept the minutes of 5/12/75 as amended. Upon the recommendation of the Superintendent of Schools, it was SCI-LDUL_ OF PAYMENTS VOTED: To accept the Schedule of Payments as presented. (Brown, Berchtold, Unanimous) (See Next Page) Discussion regarding Sumer Workshops was held during the two previous SUiBER WORKSHOltS meetings. The school committee was asked. this evening to cast its vote on • these workshops. Mrs. Swanson said that some Questions had not been ansWered since last year's discussions on the subject. She asked. whether teachers not involved in the workshops would use the materials developed; whether more teachers should, be involved and whether the system should be deeply involved in curriculum development at all. She felt the time had come "to pull in the reins to see where we are going". Finally, she suggested that the money for workshops should be left in the budget for 1975-76 until .we have a chance to establish some goals. Mrs. Berchtold said she had visited the professional library to examine some of the curriculum guides from previous years. She questioned. the clarity of the objectives and. wondered whether there was a jusitified need for the new proposals. She felt some "deep" questions still had to be asked. NT. Wadsworth expressed dissatisfaction about voting for each workshop separately, preferring to do it in a "block". He said this was a policy matter which the committee should resolve. As far as curriculum development was con- cerned, he felt that this Has not as important as the teachers who carry out the program. He wanted to see more staff participation in this area. Mr. Brown agreed with Mr. Wadsworth's comments and asked for a system of accountability for the workshops so we can measure the results of curriculum development. He also asked for the establishment of an Ln-service training program for teachers. Dr. :'Obert noted that he had made a presentation. of the RAP and Scope and Sequence Charts.
