HomeMy WebLinkAbout1959-01-27 January 27 , 1959 The Historic Dist-riots Commission held a public hearing Monday, Jan.26, 1959 at 8-00 P.M. in the First Floor Conference Room,Cary Memorial Building on the application of the Theatre Camera Shop for a certificate of appropriateness for the erection of signs on the store at 1793 Mass.Zve. This application was originally heard on Oct. 7 , 1958 and due notice of the meeting of Jan, 26, 1959 was giver_ to the Town Clerk.. Sitting on the Commission were Charles G.Davis , Chairman, Dexter A.�mith, Philip B.Parsons , floyd J.Taylor and Associate Member Mrs.Robert C.Merriam. Mr. Venier stated he wished a sign on the Mass' .Ave side to be of hollow stainless steel letters 12" in height which would be mounted on a stainless steel continuous base. after some discussion it was suggested that this base would preferably be not more than V in height. These letters are to be mounted on the base so there will be a space between face of building and back of letters. This base will projecC from face of building 611. The bac_- of each letter will be open and there will be blue mercury gas light tubes in the hollow of each letter, so connected that no tubing will appe-r from the front. Mr.Venier stated he wished to have also a sign over the Depot Square side window consisting of 8rf stainless steel letters to be mounted directly on the existing panel, to say "CamerasP4 and 4pilm". The background of this sign °grill be the same color as the existing trim on the building. A discussion was held on this application and it was decided to grant this , provided the base be cut down. VOTE- It was unanimously voted to issue a certificate of appropriateness to Theatre Oamera Shop for the erection of signs and the Chairman was directed to sign the Certificate of Appropriateness as prepared. MACNBIL INSUR'.NCE .AGENCY:,' It had come to the attention of the Commission that signs�bw$rected on this building, "Mill Owners Mutual Life Insurance"Co.� for which no certificate had been asked or _ranted. A letter was written to Mr.Jobn F.MtacNeil asking that he either remove the signs or obtain a proper certificate. GLADYS Mt.MOORE: r1ir.Taylor stated he had been in touch with Mr.Moore regarding the painting of the wood cornice at 1851 Mass.Ave . Mr.Moore stated it was impossible to do this if the temperature was below 31 degrees and due to the cold or rainy weather; he had been unable to do this but definitely would just as soon as possible. CHAPTER 626., Acts of 1958: Pilr.Davis read to the Commission this Chapter which states that the meetings of the Commission, as well as other boards, etc. shall be open to the public and that the Town Clerk shall be notified in writing of all meetings, giving the date time and place of meetings. It was au-'g:-,sted three copies be made of this notice, one for the Vown Clerk to put on the bulletin board in the Town Hall, one for his records and one copy for the Commission which would be stamped and signed by the Town Clerk. a-2 BMJDGET: Mr.Davis reported that he had he,,rd from the Town Officials that the Commission had overdrawn their budget by approximately $10,00 and word had been received from the Town Accountant that $10.00 had been transferred to the account of the Historic Districts Commission to cover this. WRITTEN, HUTCHINS AND FRENCH, Architec#,s: 'Mr.7thitten had been in touch. with Mr.Davis. They are representing the bank which has been given permission to buy the Depot. He stated that they would like to tear down the present Depot and put up a good Colonial brick building and wished to knew what Mr.Davis thought the reaction of the Commission would be. Mr.Davis said he could not speak for the Commission. After some discussion, it was suggested Mr. Davis tell Mr.whitten that it might be a wise idea to have the two taken up at once, i.e. , tearing down the present Depot and then have plans for the new building. HANCOCK CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH: Money has been voted by the SeRectmen to Mr.Stevens to appeal this case . Mr.Stevens is thinking of drafting a lett-.r to the Church, stating on what basis the Commission could sit down with them in an effort to discuss this base. He will try to formulate this soon. ELECTION: Due to the fact that Mr.Northen was not present, it was decided to try to hold this elecltion of officers for the Commission the week of Feb.9th. This base will project from face of building 6". The back of each letter will be open and there will be blue mercury gas light tubes in the hollow of each letter, so connected that no tubing will appear from the front. Mr.Venier. stated he wished to have also a sign over the Depot Souare side window consisting of 81" stainless steel letters to be mounted directly on the existing panel, to say "cameras" and "film". The background of this sign will be the same color as the existing trim on the building. A discussion was held on this application and it was decided to grant this , provided the Dase be cut down, VOTE; It was unanimously voted to issue a certificate of appropriateness to Theatre Camera Shop for the erection of signs and the Chairman was directed to sign the Certificate of Appropriateness as prepared,, p-3 HANCOCK CONGREGATIONAL CHURN- Money has been voted by the Selectmen to Mr.Stevens to appeal this case.
