From this however must be deducted about.$1300 of the un- expended .balance of the school grant which will be required in a short time, the balance of the Highway and Pauper grants and the sums required to meet deficiencies and the Miscellaneous demands upon the Treasurey will ' in a short time reduce that sum to . same $3200. The slim now paid to the families ofthe soldiers will require about $130 per month and though the greater .part of it • Will be refunded by the state, it'will not come into the Treasury till some time next Spring. On the whole we find the fin- ances of the Town in a good condition and with proper economy, we think the money in the Treasury will be sufficient to meetthe demand against the till the next tax bill shn11 be committed to the Collector. 169 The peculiar character of the expenditure seems to require that the Selectmen: should submit a state- ment of the amount they have paid towards the support of the families of those who have enlisted into the service - of the United States as soldiers. Up to Ian. 1. 1862., 'we had paid . out $646.19, to which we claim of • the -State $562.39, . being an expenditure made the Selectmen of .$83.800 to be born by -the . Town. Since the first of 3anuary : we have .paid : out $261.13, $228.25 of which will be refunded by the State in case the law remains unchanged. The expenditure -has been greater through theinclementseason than it need to be through the warm 'season of the year. 170 It has been our endeavour in carrying- out the vote of the .town to make confortable provision for the families of all those who have volunteered in defence of our country, so that the soldiers may 'feel confident, while they are enduring the privations of the camp that their families will be made comfortable at home. The Selectmen also settled with Charles Nunn, the Treasurer for the past year. Present Hudson & Wm. H. Smith. Examined the Report on the Town Expenses and directed it to be printed. .April 14 1862 The Selectmen were in session, and it being at Town Meeting, they submited to the Town the -following Report and Estimates for Town purposes for the com- ing year. The peculiar state of the times will probably justify the Selectmen in departing from their usual course so far as to present to the Town the present condition of -its finances, as well as the prosutive burden which will be imposed the coming year. In obedience:to the vote of the Town we have revised and published a statement of the expendi- tures of the Town, during the past year, and 1?9 though. the Report does not contain a list of tax payers &c. &c as heretofore, we think, the people will will be satisfied when we inform that the whole expense of auditing and, publishing is $87.53 less than it was year before last, and 147 less than last year. By this report it will be seen that the balance in the Treasury on the first of April 1862 was $2458. The sum due frau the state, and available the current year will carry this sum up to $3000, which will undoubedly be available as soon as the same will be required to meet our payments. The demands against the. Town have been paid, so that there is a less amount of outstanding debts than heretofore at the commencement of the fiscal year. Nor ar the Selectmen aware of any unusual expenditure which will be likely to occur the current year, except the sum payable to the families of the Volunteers. This sutra will not fall much if any short of $1900; the greater part of which will be reimbursed by the state. If the Town therefore continues its present policey, which we think is no more than just to the families of those who have volunteered their services in defenceof our country, it will be necessary to appropriate $1300 to meet the payments before the sum reimbursed by the State becomes available From present appearances the State tax will be $3636, being $3030 more than it was the last year; by the County tax will be $1494. being $266 less than last year. So:the State and County tax will be $2764 more than 1atst year. The estimore we have submitted will require a grant of 11630, which less than .the grants for .several years past.. If this be adopted by the Townitwill make a tax for the current year of. $16,760, less by $2544 than it was in 1859. It does not appear there- fore that our tax will be at all oppressive the ensu- ing year. But in the present depressed state of bus- iness, towns as well as individuals should avoid all extravagant expenditures Charles Hudson ) Webster .Smith )Sete. ctmen Wm....
