Sandra Shaw suggested that a good starting point would be to approach Barbara P alant to see
what she thinks about the idea and ask if she has any suggestions or questions regarding the
memorial class. She stressed that we make sure we have Barbara's blessing to do the course
before taking any further action.
Christine explained that money could be donated directly into the gift fund and then we
would use that money to buy supplies and pay the instructor. The instructor cost for four
classes would be$1,200 to train 32 people.
Doug Lucente brought up that Dan wanted to see as many people become certified as
possible and he thinks that 32 people a year would not meet the standards Dan would have
wanted. The group discussed this and came to the conclusion that in order to train hundreds
of people we would need a lot more staff and at this stage we are not prepared for it. The
group agreed that the quality of the training is preferred over the quantity trained.
Christine did bring up that the Fire Department wanted to use the Community Center for a
crash course in CPR that would appeal to the masses and not be as long as a regular course.
More details still have to be gathered before anything is advertised.
The next steps for the memorial class were described as:Nancy will reach out to Barbara and
contact the Fire Department about the community course,Christine will check what types of
payment the gift fund can take, and Archana will do more research in regards to
gofundme.com and their process of gathering money.
4. Community Center Donation Policy
Christine Dean expressed that the Community Center receives many phone calls each week
from residents wanting to donate pianos, books, dolls, puzzles, and many other household
items. She proposed making a donation policy and asked for suggestions on wording.
Nancy suggested making a wish list and writing down specific items that we would accept as
donations.
Sandra suggested having the window pane shop keep a running list of items that people want
to donate. If someone read the list and wanted a certain item then the window pane will
provide contact info so the item can be picked up on their own time.
Doug said that the easiest way to go about the donation policy is saying that the Community
Center does not accept anything that is used, but to also include a list of places that would
take donation items. Doug said to reach out to Robert Bowden as he would have a list of
places that take donations.
5. Community Center,Recreation, and Human Services Update
Christine had brought some updates for Charlotte as she was not present in the meeting: there
will be a vaping seminar will be on October 17 at 7:00pm in Cary Hall, QPR(Question,
Persuade,Refer)training on November 15 at 9:30-11:30am, and a Documentary named Gen
Silent which is about six LGBT seniors in Boston who must choose whether to hide their
identities to survive in the long-term health care system. This will happen November 4th from
1-3pm in Cary Memorial Library.
Charlotte Rodgers will be retiring and there will be a gathering for her on November 29th at
4:30pm.
Christine also let everyone know that there was a ground break ceremony for Lexington
Children's Place, and they are planning to be open for the 2019-2020 school year.
Christine asked the group about their thoughts on a smoke-free campus for the Community
Center as she has received a complaint from a resident that the 15 foot rule was not enough.
Archana suggested that a bigger study could be done to all municipal buildings because if you
change one then you should change them all.
Nancy was curious how we would enforce the rule.
Sandra suggested that we see what policy Cary Library has.
