ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (Describe important architectural features and
evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.)
This is a well-maintained example of Italianate Vernacular architecture.
Features include a flat roof with broad eave trimmed with simple curved brackets,
and corner pilasters.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state
history and how the building relates to the development of the community.)
The i)uilding was owned in 1675 by Albert G. Spaulding (b. 1819, d. 1878) .
By 1887, Mrs. Charles Wetherbee owned it. From before 1898 until after 1906
Charles Henry Franks owned the property. Franks went to sea at the age of 16;
at 20 he learned carpentry. He became a Boston-police officer in 1876 and a
Lexington officer in 1888. Ten years later he was Chief of Police in
Lexington, a position he held until after 1912.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE:
On August 10, 1872 the Lexington Minute-man reported that"Hammon Reed sold 21,412 feet on Waltham Street to A.G.
Spaulding for$1,284.72". The present building was presumably built shortly thereafter.
