ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (Describe important architectural features and
evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.)
Part of Five Fields, a community of contemporary houses designed and developed
by The Architects Collaborative (TAC) , this house is closed off from the exterior by
two parallel masonry walls but on the interior opens onto a courtyard. Although
this house is different from any other in Five Fields, it has many common features,
such as an open living/dining/kitchen area and a carport with outside storage space.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state
history and how the building relates to the development of the community.)
This house was designed by a member of The Architects Collaborative (TAC) as
his own residence and is one of about 10 such custom-designed houses in Five Fields
(see Five Fields area form) . It shows elements of both Bauhaus and Japanese
influence, the latter particularly apparent in the interior courtyard, and has in
turn been studied by Japanese architectural historians as an example of a courtyard
house.
`= BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES (name of publication, author, date and publisher)
10M - 7/82
