BUILDING FORM
ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION ❑see continuation sheet
Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community.
2219 Massachusetts Ave. is called the"stone store"for good reason, for it is constructed entirely of fieldstone—the only building
of its kind in Lexington. The building is rectangular, one story, has three bays in front and an undetermined number on the side
(there is only one window opening), and is front-gabled with a low-pitched roof. On the front are openings in the stonework for a
center entrance with a window on either side and there is one window on the west elevation near the front corner. At the rear is an
addition clad with vertical wood siding.
HISTORICAL NARRATIVE ❑see continuation sheet
Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local(or state) history. Include uses of the building, and the
role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community.
Although the Stone Store is reputed to have been built in 1880, it was actually built in 1906 by Nellie T. and Thomas H. Breslin,
who that year had purchased the house and lot on the corner of Massachusetts Ave. and Lake St. and then erected this building
next to the house. This building was presumably originally built as a store, although until 1922 Thomas Breslin is listed in
Lexington Directory's as a clerk in G. W. Spaulding's store in Lexington Center. After 1922,however, Breslin seems to have
operated a grocery in this location.
BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES ❑ see continuation sheet
Lexington Directory. 1906, 1908-09, 1913, 1916, 1918, 1922.
Lexington Valuation Lists. 1889-1907.
Middlesex Registry of Deeds.
