AVENUE
MASSACHUSETTS HISTORICAL COMMISSION Area(s) Form No.
MASSACHUSETTS ARCHIVES BUILDING 131
220 MORRISSEY BOULEVARD
BOSTON,MASSACHUSETTS 02125
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE:
The original owner of this house was James S. Munroe. It may be the cottage mentioned in the Lexington Minute-man on
January 6, 1893:
A cottage is in the course of erection by Mr. James T. (?)Munroe, on his estate in front of the Munroe railroad
station, which will be occupied by his overseer. The cottage is to sit on the knoll which rises out of the
surrounding meadow land like an island or oasis, and is shaded by beautiful trees. it is an unusually picturesque
spot, and judging from appearances the cottage is to be in keeping with the pretty location.
After James S. Munroe's death, the property was sold to Marion Kimball, wife of Edward. Edward Kimball worked as
an engineer for the New England Telephone Company. The Kimballs lived here as early as 1913. They had two
daughters, Marion and Sallie. The younger Marian later married Roland Greeley(son of architect William Roger
Greeley). The house was initially numbered 295 Massachusetts Avenue; about 1930 it was changed to 1359
Massachusetts Avenue. The Kimballs were still living here in 1942.
The house was later occupied by Roland and Marion Greeley.
