This physician's hobby was carpentry, and "when
things weren't going just right for him in the medical profession, he would
grab his carpentry tools and start building. This accounts for the peculiar
architecture of the building with the mansard roof." -(Reminiscences of Arthur
F. Field [19771 as told to S. Lawrence Whipple. See archives of the Lexington
Historical Society.)
The small structure behind this house is the former blacksmith shop of
Michael A. Pero who practiced smithing from the 1890s until about 1920. This
shop formerly stood across the street on Independence Avenue, behind the
present (1984) block of stores. It was moved to its .present location sometime
prior to 1928 when Arthur B. Field opened an auto repair business in it. (He
rented the building.)
S.
