ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (Describe important architectural features and
evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.)
This Greek Revival house is the only one of its type in its neighborhood
and, in spite of its vinyl siding, retains many of its exterior features: the
full entablature across both the sides and gable ends, the corner pilasters,
and the side entrance in the gable end. The long rear ell was apparently added
relatively early, for it also is on a granite foundation. The exterior chimney
is almost certainly a later alteration.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state
history and how the building relates to the development of the community.)
The section of Marrett Road on which this house stands was not built
until 1832 so this house was presumably built sometime between that date and
1852, when it is indicated on the map. The owner at that time was apparently
Horatio Wellington, who was married in 1841, suggesting a possible date of
construction. Wellington had apparently moved to Charlestown in 1852 and by
1876 the owner was George G. Fuller; in 1889 the owner was Albert F. Hitchings,
a farmer who had moved to Lexington in the late 1880s, and in 1898 the house,
by then with not only its long rear ell but also an attached barn and
outbuildings on the south which have since been removed, was owned by the
Haseltines, for whom no occupations are given in either the 1899 or 1906
directories.
ti BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES (name of publication, author, date and publisher)
t Hudson, Charles.
