BUILDING FORM (46 Harding Rd.)
ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION
Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of the building in terms of other buildings within the
community.
The house at 46 Harding Road(MHC #1061) is a good and well-preserved example of the Four Square style, a style which
appears to have found limited popularity in Lexington in the early 20th century. Characteristic of the style, the clapboarded
dwelling is capped by an asphalt-shingled hip roof with overhanging eaves; hip-roofed dormers are centered on each of the
elevations. The house rests on a brick foundation with a brick exterior chimney on the south side breaking through the
overhanging eaves. The wide facade is fronted by a single-story porch supported by Roman Doric columns with single stick
balusters. Sheltered by the porch is a sidehall entrance and two 6/1 windows;the upper story of the facade is punctuated by
two 6/1 windows.
A paved driveway extends to the north of the house, terminating at a stuccoed, hip-roofed garage (MHC#1062) constructed
in 1931. The sliding doors consist of 5 x 2-lights set above recessed panels which are filled with vertical boards.
HISTORICAL NARRATIVE
Describe the history of the building. Explain its associations with local(or state) history. Include uses of the building and
the rc le(s) the owners/occupants played within the community.
\
This iiiouse was constructed for John and Hilda Andresen in 1925 and was one of the earliest houses erected on Harding
Street. The lot comprises Block 1, #15 & 16 of the L.B.T. or Manor subdivision. Valuation records indicate that the house
was assessed at$7,000 upon its completion; records indicate that the garage was constructed in 1931. John Andresen, a
painter lived in the house only a few years before his death but Hilda Andresen continued to live here as late as 1960. Her
son, Ralph, also a painter, still owns the house today.
BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES
Lexington Assessors Records.
Lexington Directories,various dates.
Lexington Valuation Lists, various dates.
Recommended for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
