Include uses of the building, and the role(s)the <br /> owners/occupants played within the community. <br /> The funds for a Grove Street school were appropriated at town meeting,March 28, 1960. Estabrook School was dedicated on <br /> October 8, 1961. It was designed by the architectural firm of Clinch, Crimp,Brown&Fisher. The firm also designed other <br /> schools in Lexington including the Fiske School,Bridge School and Bowman School. <br /> The school is named after Joseph Estabrook(1669-1733),the first school teacher in Lexington. Born in Concord,he bought a <br /> 200 acre farm in Lexington in 1693.According to Hudson's History of the Town of Lexington, "In 1716 Captain Estabrook was <br /> employed as a teacher and continued his school five months, for which 15 pounds were paid him from the town treasury." <br /> Joseph Estabrook also served as Town Clerk,was elected Selectman several times and served a term as Representative to the <br /> General Court which was the Massachusetts Colony's legislature.
