BUILDING FORM (30 Grove Street) <br /> ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION <br /> Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of the building in terms of other buildings within the <br /> community. <br /> The house at 30 Grove Street is a 2 1/2-story, side-gabled dwelling which is sheathed in clapboards and capped by an <br /> asphalt-shingled roof with cornice returns on the gable ends. The three-bay facade is fronted by a hipped-roof, single-story, <br /> Craftsman-style porch with columns consisting of sets of three 2 x 4s with horizontal members at the mid section. The <br /> geometric balusters are set above an airspace enclosed by vertical boards. A centrally located pedimented projection enlarges <br /> the porch in front of the entrance. The center entrance contains a wooden door with 3 x 2-panes over three vertical panels. <br /> The 2/2 windows are set into molded surrounds,those on the first floor are somewhat longer. An exterior brick chimney rises <br /> along the south gable end. <br /> Extending behind the main house is a two-story ell with a modern deck fronting the upper level. Behind the ell is a large two- <br /> story addition constructed c.1970. It rests on a concrete foundation and is lit by 1/1 windows. There are three overhead <br /> garage doors on the south side of the addition. <br /> �t <br /> HISTORICAL NARRATIVE <br /> Describe the history of the building. Explain its associations with local(or state) history. Include uses of the building and <br /> the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community. <br /> The exact date of construction of this house is not known at this time. It is not depicted on the 1875 Map of Lexington. The <br /> 1906 Atlas indicates that the property, consisting of four buildings, was then owned by Olive Stroh(wife of Frederick Stroh). <br /> Directories indicate that the Stroh family lived here from about 1895 to 1913. <br /> The house has been owned by the Cosgrove family since about 1918. The 1920 Valuation List indicates that William J. <br /> Cosgrove paid ta,:es on a house, barn and two acres of land. The house was remodeled into a two-family dwelling about <br /> 1936.
