BUILDING FORM (21 Glen Road South) ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of the building in terms of other buildings within the community. Located on a steep and wooded hill on a badly rutted dirt road between Grant Street and Glen Road, 21 Glen Road South (MHC 41053) is a modest 1 1/2-story, side-gabled dwelling which rests on a fieldstone foundation. Projecting from the broad side of the house is a two-bay wide hip-roofed porch supported by plain posts. Underneath the porch the paneled wooden front door displays 4 x 2-upper lights. There are two bays of windows on one side of the entrance and three on the other. Fenestration consists primarily of 6/1 windows. Adjacent to the road is an early 20th century garage(MHC#1054) which appears to survive in a largely unaltered condition. The building has mortared fieldstone walls with two sets of double doors facing the road. Each leaf displays 4 x 2-lights over four horizontal recessed panels. Windows on the side walls contain 6/6 sash. H14TORICAL NARRATIVE Desycribe the history of the building. Explain its associations with local(or state) history. Include uses of the building and the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community. According to local sources this house is reportedly a Sears &Roebuck house and was built as a wedding present for the daughter of a family on Oakland Street. Unfortunately this could not be verified. Research indicates that the house was constructed prior to 1920, possibly for Joseph and Lena(Tukey)Fiske (who married in 1905). The 1920 Lexington Valuation List assesses Lena Fiske for a house valued at$3200 including 17,770 square feet of land. According to deeds,the land was the lar er and southeast portion of Lot 40 on plan of land in Lexington owned by David Muzzey in 1888. (see �� e� Da� c�oU � MHC (079), Joseph Fiske was the proprietor of Fiske Brothers store at 1766 Mass. Ave. selling bicycles, shoes and boots. The Fiskes continued to occupy the house until 1955 when Joseph Fiske sold the property to C. Russell Smallman.
