If checked,you must attach a completed National Register Criteria Statement form. ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION: Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local(or state)history. Include uses of the building, and the role(s)the owners/occupants played within the community. The groundbreaking for the Maria Hastings School was held August 12, 1954. An open house was held at the newly opened school on November 6, 1955. In 1994 the school underwent an extensive renovation. The school was designed by Charles H. Cole 2°a of Lexington who also designed the Diamond School in Lexington. The school is named for Maria Hastings Cary(1801-1881),wife of William Harris Cary. She was a member of one of Lexington's oldest families. Her husband and his brother, Isaac Harris Cary, operated a store in Boston and later moved to New York where they became prosperous importers. William Harris Cary and Maria Hastings Cary lived in Brooklyn but retained a strong interest in Lexington and made frequent and long visits to town.
