ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (Describe important architectural features and
evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.)
Despite its appearance of being an earlier house, this house was rebuilt
in the 1940s on the foundation of a 1920s house that had been completely
destroyed.' Thus, the "old-fashioned" details such as the carved sunburst on
the dormer pediment, the turned porch posts with open brackets, and the
asymmetrical chimneys probably reflects the builder's taste rather than an
effort to copy the original house.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state
history and how the building relates to the development of the community.)
_ According to the present owner, the original house on this site was
built in the 1920s. During Prohibition the house harbored a still, which, on
January 21, 1940, exploded and in the ensuing fire the whole house was destroyed.
It lay in ruins during World War II but in 1947-1948 was completely rebuilt by
the present owner's father, a builder.
BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES (name of publication, author, date and publisher)
Personal communication from Marilyn Ballou
10M - 7/82
