A meeting of the Historic Districts Commission was held on Wednesday.
February 27, 1980, in the Selectmen's Meeting Room. Town Office Building,
Lexington. Present were Commissioners John R. Packard, Chairman; John L.
Davies; Roland B. Greeley; Ann Wallace; S. Lawrence Whipple; and Associate
Gommissioners Linda J. McAuley and Richard S. Morehouse. The Commission
was pleased to welcome Mrs. Wallace as a new member. replacing Georgia H.
Williams, whose loss will be keenly felt after so many years of conscientious
service.
At 8s00 P.M. Mr. and Mrs. Arch presented scale drawings for an "Arch
Athletic Wear, Inc." sign, to be erected at their store at 852 Massachusetts
Avenue, which is within the Nast Village District. The Commission discussed
the drawings at some length. Having found them inadequate as to letter
style. size, and relationship to each other, the Commission asked the appli-
cants to revise the drawings with the help of a professional sign painter,
and return for a continuation of the hearing on March 12.
At 8s35 P.M. Mr. J. Paul Fennell of the Salem Sign Company presented
plans for a new sign for the Mall Discount (formerly Big L Health and
Beauty Aids) premises at 1800 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the
Battle Green District. The sign is a standard one being erected at numerous
other Mall Discount stores. Mr. Packard, having seen one of these on
Washington Street, Boston, expressed little enthusiasm for it, but in the
end was persuaded by the careful consideration given the sub3ect by his
fellow Commissioners, who made significant modifications in the design,
that revised plans should be sympathetically received at a continuation of
the hearing on March 12.
The meeting adjourned at 9s10 P.M. xithou/t-woting on any matter.
