A meeting of the Historic Districts Commission was held
at 8s10 P. M. at the Selectman's Meeting Room on Wednesday,
September 12, 1979• Present were Commissioners John R.
Packard, Chairman; Georgia H. Williams, Secretary; John L.
Davies; S.I,awrence Whipple; and Associate Commissioner Howard
C. Nason.
A hearing was held at 8s 10 P. M. on the application of
Friendly Evangelical Church for a certificate of appro-
priateness with respect to the installation of a sign at
1912 Massachusetts Avenue (Hancock Church). The church was
represented by its pastor, Rev. Joseph Mazzola who submitted
three copies of plans and a photograph of the sign. On
examination it appeared that the sign would be about 1~'
X 4', free standing on two posts and constructed of wood.
Several members suggested that a frame around the sign would
enhance its appearance and the Rev. Mazzola agreed. Although
there was some discussion of slipping the sign into the
present "Visitors Parking" sign post to the left of the
driveway, it was noted that the church sign has different
dimensions, and it was therefore VOTED to approve the sign,
and place it where the Visitors Parking sign now appears,
that sign to be removed. Details of the sign will be set
forth in the Certificate of Appropriateness to be issued.
A hearing was held at 8s32 on the application of
Middlesex Family Association, represented by Mr. Steven
Zeitlin, for a sign at 1620 Massachusetts Avenue. The
sign will resemble others erected on the premises, and an

on-sight inspection of the proposed location satisf ied the
Commission that there was sufficient space to hang it. It
was therefore VOTED to approve the details to be set forth
in the Certificate of Appropriateness to be issued.
A hearing was held at 8:50 P.M. on the application of
Joseph Trani, Inc. for a Certif icate of Appropriateness with
respect to the construction of an addition to the building
at 1775 Massachusetts Avenue. The applicant was represented
by its President, Joseph A. Trani, Jr. and architect Charles
A Cole~II who reviewed his plans with the Commission. The
addition will extend the building to the rear and double
its size. Wooden clapboards will be used throughout, replacing
aluminum ones on part of the existing structure. The Commi-
sion was favorably impressed by the plans and accordingly
VOTED to approve the same. Further details will appear in
the Certificate to be issued and in the plans themselved
on file with the Commission.
At 9s20 P. M. Nelson and Amy Gore discussed trim colors
for their house at 822 Massachusetts Avei~~e. The Commission
agreed with them in favoring Benjamin Moore's "Waterbury
Cream" subject to an on-sight inspection of a sample, and a
formal vote by the Commission at its next meeting (Mr. Morehouse
having left before the hearing, thus leaving the Commission
without a quorum).
At gc40 P.M. the Commission voted to approve bills for
publication and clerical expenses in the amount of $116 and the
