HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION
A meeting of the Historic Districts Commission was held on Wednesday,
January 31, 1979, in Room G-15, Town Office Building, Lexington. Present
were Commissioners John R. Packard, Chairman; Georgia H. Williams, Secre-
tary; John L. Davies; Roland B. Greeley; S. Lawrence Whipple; and Associate
Commissioner Richard S. Morehouse.
A hearing wa.s held at 8:05 P.M. on the application of 1775 Wine &
Spirit Shop, Inc. for a Certificate of Appropriateness with respect to the
erection and display of a sign for the store at 1775 Massachusetts Avenue.
Mr. Packard read the legal notice. Mr. William Foley represented the
applicant and submitted three copies of scale drawings showing the proposed
signs and photographs showing the existing signs. The letters would be the
same style lettering as those on the existing sign and would be of black
plastic. The word "Wines" would remain on the alley side of the building.
The new sign would read "1775 Wine & Spirits" to the left of the column as
your face the store front and "Liquors" to the right of the column. The
hearing was closed at 8:12 P.M. Upon motion duly made and seconded, it was
VOTED to issue a Certificate of Appropriateness to 1775 Wine & Spirit Shop,
Inc. with respect to the erection and display of signs on the store at 1775
Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle Green District. Partici-
pating in this decision were Commissioners John R. Packard, Georgia H.
Williams, John L. Davies, Roland B. Greeley, and S. Lawrence Whipple.
A hearing was held at 8si5 P.M. on the application of Consumer Value
Stores for a Certificate of Appropriateness with respect to changes in the
store front, erection and display of signs on the front and rear of the
store, and erection of an awning on the store front at 1735 Massachusetts
Avenue, which is within the Battle Green District. Mr. Moe Morrissetts of
CVS submitted three copies of a scale drawing showing proposed changes,
signs, and a smaple of the material proposed for the awning. The signs
are to be of gold leaf capital letters one inch thick and two feet high and
will be pegged off the brick walls on both front and rear of the store.
Single tube warm white fluorescent cove lighting is proposed. Following
discussion of the location of the sign on the front of the store front, it
was decided that the letters of the sign reading "CVS PHARMACY" would be
dropped two courses of brick. The awning is to be a solid red color with-
out lettering but having a scallsped edge without any trim and is to extend
across the entire store front. It is proposed to have one entrance only
which would be slightly recessed and the doors would be bronze anodized
aluminum and would match the framing of the windows. It was stated that
the brick into the entrance would run in the same direction as the sidewalk.
It was stated that the brick to the left of the entrance would be 55" high
and 24" high to the right of the doorway. Mr. Morrissetts said that they
would match the brick as closely as possible and that, where necessary, the
brick would be cleaned. Mrs. Ruth Thomas of 10 Parker Street asked if it
would be possible to use tinted glass to subdue the interior view and Mr.
Morrissette said that under the new Massachusetts Building Code they have
had to reduce the lighting and will use a different softer lighting than

what was used in the existing CVS store. Mrs. Thomas asked if there would
be interior window signs and Mr. Morrissette said they expected to have
them only behinst the check-out area. Mr. Morehouse suggested that it might
improve the appearance of the store front if the entrance door was moved
to the left to abut the pier, and Mr. Davies agreed that it would look bet-
ter. Following discussion, Mr. Davies moved that approval of the plans
for changes to the store front be contingent upon the door being moved over
to the left to be against the pilaster, seconded, and so VOTID. The only
change in the rear of the store is the new sign which will be identical to
the sign on the front of the building. The hearing was adjourned at 9:25 PM.
Mr. Morrissette was requested to send new drawings showing the door change.
Mr. Morehouse showed a sample of the letter proposed for the Isaac
Harris Cary Memorial Building. Following discussion, it was decided that
the Chairman should xrite Robert Kent and ask him to appear again to dis-
cuss both location and xording of the sign.
Mr. Packard said that the MBTA wants to replace existing signs with
new one foot by one foot signs, and it was decided that these would not
require approval by the Commission.
Mr. Morehouse stated that the roof installations were completed for
Peking Garden Restaurant and that they would be painted as soon as good
weather permits.
The meeting was adjourned at 1000 P.M.
