A meting of the Historic Districts Commission was held on Wednesday,
August 29, i973, i.n Room GAS, Town Office Bui.3.ding, I,aaington. Present
were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Chairman; Fhilip B. Parsons, Secretary;
Georgia H. Williams; and Associate Commissioners Oliver F. Hooper, and S.
Lawronce Whipple. Mr. Hooper was appointed to serve for Commissioner Thomas
J. Holzbog who was unable to be present. Mr. Whipple was appointed to serve
for Commissioner Donald J. Shaw who was representing the chairman at a meetr
ing called by the Town Manager to discuss the next fiscal year's budget.
Mr. Shaw arrived at 9;j+0 P.M.
A hearing was held at 8100 P.M. on the application of the Lexington
Driving School for a Certificate of Appropriateness with respect to the area-
tion and display of a sign for the store at 8~4 Massachusetts Avenue, which
is within the East Village District. Mr. Jaquith read the legal notice and
application. Mr. Hart, Director, submitted two drawings of the proposed sign
and taro photographs of the building where the sign is to be erected. The
sign is to fill the entire wood white backboard above the storo anti is to
have 10" black letters on a matte metal backboard. Metal screws will be used
to attach the sign to the existing backboard. ltr. Hart asked about having
the letters painted directly on the backboard or about having a wood back-
board. with painted letters to fit inside the present backboard. Following
discussion, it was decided that Mr. Hart xonld discuss these with the sign
painter and then report his deoision to the chairman. The hearing was ads

A hearing was held at 8132 P.M. on the application of Integrated Graphics,
Znc. for a Certificate of Appropriateness with respect to the eroct3on and
display of a sign for the office on the aeeond floor of the building at ~V
Waltham Street, which is within the Battle Green District. Mr. Jaquith read
the legal notice and application. Mr. Dean Borland represented the applicant
and anbmitted three drawings of the proposed sign, Dolor chips, and one
photograph showing proposed location of the sign which is to be 24" in height
and 18" in width. The sign is to be of plywood painted an Orange Berry color
and the letters are to be a light beige Dolor painted on the backboard. The
sign is to be installed in the location where four wrought iron brackets are
installed presently in the building. Mr. Jaquith asked if the word "inc."
is essential and Mr. Borland said that they use it on the door, letterheads,
etc. and that they are registered with the word and that they want it on the
sign. Mrs. Williams suggested that the word "inc." be deleted from the sign
but that the word "graphics" be left as is. Mr. Parsons said that the sign
as proposed looked fine to him. The letters would be 3 1/2" in height, ~
there would be no molding on the backboard, and the sign backboard would
pro3ect 3 1/2 to 4" from the building. Mr. Hooper said that the sign was
not objectionable to him but that he could not see what the sign will do for
them. Mr. Jaquith said that he does not like the word '"inc." aril that the
commission has been trying to keeg the word out of signs. He added that from
the readability point he does not feel the word "inc." is good. Mr. Borland
said that to distinguish the firm they had incorporated and they would like
the word "inc." on the sign. The hearing was closed at 9s4~5 P.M.

An adjourned hearing xas held at 9150 P.M. xith Amelia G. Samoylenko,
Trustee of The Laxi.ngton Mews Tract, xith respect to signs for the building
at 10-12 Mazsey Street, xhiah is xithin the Battle Green District. Mrs.
3amoylenko submitted a nex drawing oP the "Mews" sign xhich she proposes to
install over the main doorways on the Muszey Street and parking lot elevate
t3.ons. The sign is to be i 1/4" thick, have a dark brown stain, and have
incised gold leaf letters. Mrs. 3amoylenko said that the "Maas Art Cinema"
Would need seven instead of eight gooseneck lights and that they xould have
an overall projection not to exceed 24". There would be one light 2" in
from sash end of the sign, one at the center, and two would be centered on
each side of the sign betxeen the end and center lights. She said that a
hearing for the free standing directory sign on Hussey Strreet is scheduled
For hearing before the Board of Appeals on Tuesday, September 4th. The
hearing was adjourned at 1Ot20 P.M.
Mr. Jaquith stated that an application had been received from Ernest
A. Giroux with respect to moving his sign to 25 Depot Square and a hearing
was scheduled for September nth. Mr. Jaquith said that John McSwee~y had
talked with him about the erection of a sign on the Former Harrington prop-
erty on the corner oY Massachusetts Avenue and Clarke Street to direct people
to the Old Belfry and about the installation of park benches in various
locations.
It was moved, seconded, and unanimously VOZED to issue a Certificate
of Appropriateness to Integrated Graphics Inc.. with respect to the erection
and display of a sign for the office on the second floor of the building at
4 Waltham Street, which is within the Battle Green District. Participating
in this decision w®re Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Philip H. Parsons,
Georgia H. Williams, acid Assooia.ts Commissioners Oliver F. Hooper and S.
Laxrence Whipple.
Mr. Shaw reported on the meeting with the Town Manager and said that ~
budget requests For the year starting July i, 197 are to be submitted by
September 15th. He said that, if any board or commission feel that their
budget is increased because of the Bicenntenial, they should show this in-
crease separately.
The meeting was adjourned at 11e4 P.M.
