HISTORIC DISTRICTS CONAffSSION
MINUTf~ OF A MEETING FIELD ON SEPT~R 16, 1970
Tire Historic Districts Commission held a meeting on Wednesday, September
16, 1970, in the Bird Room of the Cary Memorial Building, Lexington. Present
were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Chairman; George E. Graves; Max H. Straw;
Georgia H. Williams; and Associate Commissioners George W. Emery; arxi Franklin
C. Hudson. The meeting was called to order at 7:35 P.M. by the Chairman. It
was moved, seconded, and unanimously V02ED that Mrs. Williams serve as Secrete
tary Pro Tem.
An informal meeting was held with Joseph Trani, President of Joseph Trani
Incorporated, to discuss plans of the proposed change for the front of the
.store at 1775-1775A Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battl® Green
District. A hearing on this was scheduled for October 14, 1970.
An adjourned hearing was held at 8s 15 P.M. on the application of Philip
John atxl Julie Cadle for a Certificate of Appropriateness with respect to fenc-
ing for the premises at 15 Mariam Street, which is within the Battle Green
Districet. Mr. Emery was appointed to serve for Philip B. Parsons, Secretary,
who was unable to be present. Following discussion, the hearing was adjourned
at 9:00 P.M.
An informal meeting was held with Patricia Hagedorn regarding proposed
signs for Modern Gourmet, Inc. at 27 Waltham street, which is within the Battle
Green District. A hearing on this was scheduled for October 1, 1970.
Mr. Jaquith read a letter from Dean Nicholson, attorney for Simon Goldberg
and Samuel B. Sheldon, owners of the property at 19 Muzzey Street, advising
that arrangements have been made for preservation of the spiral staircase in
the building now on the premises prior to demolition of this building. The
Commission agreed that the Chairman .should write to Mr. Nicholson approving of
the arrangements axed also ask that the Commission be told of final disposition
of the spiral staircase.
A letter from Donald R. Irwin, Town Building Inspector, was read asking
the Commission to consider requ®sting extension of the Historic Districts Act
to Route 128 from Hastings Park. Mr. Jaquith read a letter from Harvard Trust
Company regarding the logo to be installed on their building at 1761-176,5 Mae-
sachusetts Avenu®, which is within the Dattle Green Aistrict, and it was der
cided that additional information should be presented to the Commission. Mr.
Jaquith read a letter from Paul G, Yewell, representing Hancock United Church
of Christ, regarding the screening azxi fencing stipulated in the Certificate
issued to the Nyes at 1932 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle
Green District.
It was moved, seconded, and unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate of
Appropriateness to Philip John and Julie Cadle with respect to fencing for the
premises. at 15 Meri.am Street. Participating in this decision were Commissioners
Wilbur M. Jaquith, George E. Graves, Max H. Straw, Georgia, H. Williams„ and As-
sociate Commissioner George W. Emery.
The meeting was adjourned at 10e5~.M. ~ /

Due to the inability of Commissioner Philip B. Parsons to
sit on the petition of Philip John and Julie Cadle the chair
designates Associate George W. EtserY to serve in this action.
