MINUTES OF A MATING HELD ON AUGUST 19, 1970
The Historic Districts Commission held a meeting on Wednesday;, August
19, 1970, in the ffird Room of the Cary Memorial Building, Lexington. Present
were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Chairman; Philip B. Parsons, Secretary=
Max H. Straw; George E. Graves; Georgia H. Williams; and Associate Commis-
stoners George W. Emory; Franklin C. Hudson= and S. Lawrence Whipple.
It was moved, seconded, and unanimously VOTED that Mr. Straw serve as
Chairman Pro Tem. Mr. Hudson was appointed to sersre for Mr. Jaquith who was
unable to serve on the first .hearing. A hearing was held at 7x35 P.M. on the
application of the Harvard Trust Company fora Certificate of Appropriateness
with respect to the erection anti display of a temporary sign at 1761-1765
Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle Green District. Mr. Straw
read the legal notice arxi the letter requesting this hearing. Present for
the applicant were Herbert M. Allen, First Vice President of the Bank, and ~
E. T. Steffian, Architect. Three copies of a scale drawing of the temporary
sign to be erected and photographs of the proposed location of the sign were
submitted. The hearing was adjourned at 7a45 P,M.
A hearing was held at 7x55 P.M. on the application of the Theatre Phar-
macy, Inc. for a Certificate of Appropriateness with respect to the erection
of a screening fence at the rear of the store at 17&+ Massachusetts Avenue,
which is within. the Battle Green District. Mr. Jaquith read the legal notice
and the letter requesting the hearing. Due to flee inability of Christopher
Venter to be present, Mr. Straw submitted a brochure showing the proposed
screening fence and a sketch of the area where it is desired to erect a closed
picket eight foot screening fence in order to hide trash containers, etc.
The hearing was ad3ourned at 8:10 P.M.
A hearing was held at 8e15 P.M. on the application of Perfection Rugg
Co. Inc. for a Certificate of Appropriateness with respect to the erection
amt display of a sign on the store front at 32 Waltham Street, which itr within
the Battle Green District. Present for the applicant were Anthony Van Brakle
and N. R. Priest of Astro Signs. Mr. Jaquith read the legal notice and the
letter requesting the hearing. Three copies of a scale drawing of the sign .
were submitted. Following dissuasion, the hearing was ad3ourned at 9e15 P.M.
A hearing was held at 9t 15 P.M. on the application of Richard Basarian
fora Certificate of Appropriateness with respect to changes in the arehitee-
tural features of the building at 807 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within
the Eaat Village District. Present for the applicant. were Richard Basarian,
proprietor of Wardrobe Pharmac$ and Roland Wardrobe, owner of the building in
which the pharmacy is located. Mr. Jaquith read the legal notice and the letr
ter requesting the hearing. Submitted to the Commission were three copies of
an artist's rendering of the proposed changes. Following discussion, the
hearing was ad3ourned at 10a20 P.M. until September 9, 1970.

Mr. Whipple stated that he has oleaned the painting of the Ha.neoek-
Clarke House and the House as shown is a gray color. He believes that the
Lexington Historical Sooiety will know the color they desire to have the
House painted within the next week or two.
Mr. Jaquith read a letter from John L. aril Jean Ann Harrigan requesting
a change in color of the exterior of the house at 1~7 Massachusetts Avenue.,
which is within the Munroe Tavern District. A color sample was shown and it
was decided to withhold a decision pexuli.ng the Commissioners viewing the house.
Mr. Jaquith stated that Grimes Travel had advised him that the store at
1851 Massachusetts Avenue was one store which had been div3.ded into two stores
and that their address is 1851 Massachusetts Avenue. The Certificate of Ap-
propriatsnesa issued to Grimes Travel for a sign was issued for the store at
1851 Massachusetts Avenue.
It was moved, seconded, and unanimously VOTED to issue a Cert3.fieate of
Appropriateness to the Harvard Trust Company for a temporary sign at i761w1765
Massachusetts Avenue. Participating in this decision were Commissioners Max
H. Straw,. Chairman Pro Tam; Philip B. Parsons, Secretary; George E. Graves;
Georgia H. Williams; and Associate Commissioner Franklin C. Hudson.
It was moved, seconded, aibd unani*~~usly VOTED to issue a Certificate of
Appropriateness to Perfection Rugg Co. Inc. for the erection and display of a
sign for the store at 32 Waltham Street. Participating in this decision were
Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Chairman; Philip B. Parsons, Secretary; George
E. Graves; Georgia. H. Williams; and Associate Commissioner Franklin C. Hudson.
The meeting was ad3ourned at S1e45 P.M.
