SC Meeting 11/18/08 page # 1 <br />LEXINGTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING <br />Tuesday, November 18, 2008 <br />Global Ministries Church <br />670 Washington Street <br />Dorchester, MA <br /> <br /> <br />Present: Superintendent Paul Ash, School Committee Chair Helen Cohen, School Committee <br />Members Rod Cole, Margaret Coppe and Ravi Sakhuja. The minutes were taken by Leora Tec. <br /> <br />The meeting was convened at 7:23 p.m. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />I. Call to Order and Welcome (Helen Cohen) <br /> <br /> <br />II. Superintendent’s Announcements <br /> <br /> Thank you for coming out to this meeting. METCO is a very important program. You can meet <br />your principals tonight. <br /> <br /> <br />III. Members’ Reports / Members’ Concerns <br /> <br /> Margaret Coppe: I am pleased to have the opportunity to be here tonight. <br /> <br /> <br />IV. Discussion Items <br /> <br />1. Update from Achievement Gap Task Force. Dr. Ash introduced the presenters after briefly <br />describing Vito La Mura’s report on the achievement gap. The update was presented by Vito <br />La Mura, author of the original achievement gap report, Dr. Steven Flynn, principal of the <br />Clarke Middle School and Dr. Lynne Sarasin, Deputy Superintendent for Curriculum, <br />Instruction and Professional Development. Dr. Sarasin gave a detailed account of the recent <br />trip to Montgomery County, MD to learn about how they narrowed the achievement gap. <br />Debora Hoard spoke about the parent survey for the achievement gap task force and thanked <br />the parents for their participation. <br /> <br /> <br />V. Motion to Adjourn (Cole, Coppe). The motion passed 5-0. <br /> <br /> <br />VI. Break-Out Sessions with Individual School Staff and Vito LaMura, Cheryl Prescott-Walden, <br />Lexington METCO Director, and Dr. Lynne Sarasin. <br /> <br /> <br />
