SC Meeting 4/14/08 page # 1 <br />LEXINGTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING <br />Monday, April 14, 2008 <br />Cary Hall, Estabrook Hall <br />1605 Massachusetts Avenue <br /> <br />Present: Superintendent Paul Ash, School Committee Chair Tom Diaz, School Committee <br />Members Rod Cole and Margaret Coppe. The minutes were taken by Leora Tec. <br /> <br /> <br />I. Call to Order and Welcome (Tom Diaz) <br /> <br /> <br />II. Public Comment <br /> <br /> Phyllis Neufeld (president of LEA): I am here to urge you to facilitate a fair and equitable <br />contract with our Instructional Assistant’s Union. <br /> <br /> Dr. Ash would also like a fair and equitable solution. The issue will be going to mediation. <br /> <br /> Members of the public expressed opinions for and against the new diversity curriculum. <br /> <br /> <br />III. Superintendent’s Announcements <br /> <br />1. Update on Clarke Middle School Pedestrian Bridge <br /> <br /> Dr. Flynn gave an update on the bridge. By late May the kids will be able to use the <br />bridge. <br /> <br />2. Final Day of school for students is June 17, which is a half day. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />IV. Discussion Items <br /> <br />1. Pilot of Secondary School Student Intervention Program <br /> <br />The first program aimed at closing the achievement gap was presented by Vito La Mura. <br />This would involve hiring substitute teachers to free up other teachers in order to give <br />intensive academic support to students who need it. <br /> <br />There were questions and discussion from the Committee. <br /> <br />Motion to approve the program described by Mr. La Mura (Cole, Coppe). The <br />motion passed 3-0. <br />
