SC Meeting 3/31/08 page # 1 <br />LEXINGTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING <br />Monday, March 31, 2008 <br />Cary Hall, Estabrook Hall <br />1605 Massachusetts Avenue <br /> <br />Present: Superintendent Paul Ash, School Committee Chair Tom Diaz, School Committee <br />Members Helen Cohen, Rod Cole, Margaret Coppe and Ravi Sakhuja. The minutes were <br />taken by Leora Tec. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> I. Call to Order and Welcome (Tom Diaz) <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />II. Superintendent’s Announcements <br /> <br />1. Award Recipients <br />a. Harrington Elementary School Music Teacher Holly Stumpf is the 2008 recipient of <br />the Sharyn Wong-Chan/Sara Harrington Diversity Award. (See attached <br />announcement.) <br />b. Three members of the music department received awards from the Massachusetts <br />Music Educators Association. Walter Pavasaris received the MMEA’s Distinguished <br />Service Award; Jeff Leonard received the Lowell Mason Award; and Martha Rogers <br />received the Society for General Music in Massachusetts Excellence in General Music <br />Award. (See attached announcement.) <br />c. Restructuring of Wellness and PE Department. Right now the thought is to hire a <br />coordinator and an assistant coordinator. <br /> <br /> <br />III. Members’ Reports / Members’ Concerns <br /> <br />Ravi Sakhuja asked about hiring minority candidates for open positions. <br /> <br />Robert Harris (assistant superintendent for human resources) stated there are not many <br />minority candidates available. <br /> <br /> <br />IV. Action Items: <br /> <br />1. Vote to Accept a $2,500 grant from the Shade Foundation of America as <br />Partial Funding for a Shade Structure at Bowman <br />Motion to Accept a $2,500 Grant from the Shade Foundation of America as <br />Partial Funding for a Shade Structure at Bowman (Cole, Cohen). The motion passed <br />5-0.
