103 <br /> TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE <br /> September 27, 1957 <br /> Members present Gustin, Lewis, Poehler, <br /> Cheever, Litchfield, Pullen <br /> Representatives Mr Viano, Chamber of Com- <br /> merce ; Mrs Hanson, L W V ; <br /> Mr William Page, U W.F ; <br /> Patricia Cutter, John Overton, <br /> Charles Glenn, Lexington. High <br /> School <br /> Miss Cutter reported that the Student Council ESSAY <br /> was in favor of a U.N Assembly, and expect to have a CONTEST <br /> foreign student speak, also Arthur Currier. They liked <br /> the idea of the essay contest, and the prizes being <br /> awarded at the Assembly Miss McIntyre suggested that <br /> the essay contest be for 12th grade only, subject to be <br /> "A Crucial Issue Facing U.N ", 1000 words Miss Mc- <br /> Intyre cannot go with. winners to New York, but Mr Gibson, <br /> teacher of American History could go Mr Poehler will <br /> get speaker for the Assembly the 24th of October <br /> After the young people left, Mr Page, speaking U W.F <br /> for the United World Federalists, told the committee of <br /> the group in Belmont who entertained members from the <br /> U N He also mentioned a film of a speech by Pres <br /> Eisenhower, September 1956, which is available from the <br /> State department, running time 9 minutes Mr Poehler <br /> took address <br /> Mr Viano informed the committee the Rotary Club ROTARY <br /> wr„l ri gniarantee- the mons-y for students-'- trip, eontaw L- <br /> ing other organizationsl <br /> Mr Gustin read a letter from Mr Smith, approv- TREE <br /> ing planting of tree, plaque, and also essay A motion <br /> was then made and seconded that a tree and plaque be <br /> purchased, for planting at the Junior High School <br /> Motion carried. Mr Gustin will order plaque, also tree <br /> to cost approximately $15 <br /> Mr Gustin read letter from Board of Selectmen THANKSGIVING <br /> authorizing the committee to coordinate and execute <br /> Thanksgiving celebration including all churches Mrs <br /> Cheever was asked to write the Council of Churr}hes, <br /> i Jewish Community Group, and Father Casey and Father <br /> Murphy inviting them to meeting October 10 at 9 p.m <br />
