53 <br /> TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE <br /> September 18,1956 <br /> The second meeting was held on Tuesday, Sep- <br /> tember 18, at 8 30 p.m in the Conference Room The <br /> six present were Gustin, Cheever, Hutchins, Poehler, <br /> Lewis, and Rooney Visitors were Mrs Pfaff from <br /> the Lexington League of Women Voters, Rev Taylor, <br /> and August Schumacher and Norma Julin from the High <br /> School <br /> Mrs Pfaff explained that with the approval <br /> of our committee the International Relations Com- <br /> mittee of the League would like to have a booth on <br /> the Green The new U N Cook Book would be on sale <br /> as well as free literature on the U N for adults <br /> and the women would be dressed in costumes of dif- <br /> ferent countries The Celebrations Committee thought <br /> this a novel idea and approved of the idea <br /> After quite a long discussion with the young <br /> people it was agreed that Gus Schumacher would go HIGH <br /> back to the Student Council and see whether the High SCHOOL <br /> School would like to plant a U N tree near the new <br /> building, what movies they would like to see about <br /> the U N , and if in another year they would be inter- <br /> ested in an essay contest about something to do with <br /> the U N , the winners of which would be sent to New <br /> York to visit the U N <br /> Rev Taylor told us that some years ago on <br /> U N Sunday people from all the local churches met REV <br /> on the Green for a short U N service This seemed TAYLOR <br /> to be something that our committee would like to can <br /> revived. <br /> Then Mr Gustin told us that the U S Com- <br /> mittee is suggesting in 1956 that towns have groups BOOKS <br /> which present collections of books to local libraries <br /> There are four U N bookshelves A, B, C, D ( for <br /> children; $10, $25, $50, and $10 each respectively ) <br /> Mr Gustin will talk up the idea to the different <br /> local service groups and see if we can present the <br /> $50 one to our main library and two $10 children's <br /> to bothpublic libraries <br /> Other suggestions were to have speakers at <br /> an evening meeting and to have neighborhood coffee <br /> U hours on U N Day Mrs Cheever was asked to write <br />
