<br />March 21, 1932
<br />The meeting was called to order at 8;02 P. M. by Town
<br />Clerk James J. Carroll. because of the absence of the Moder-
<br />ator, Robert H. Holt.
<br />There were 188 Town Meeting Members present.
<br />Selectman Mr. Trask, moved that Hon. Joseph R. Cotton,
<br />be nominated to act as Moderator Pro -tens, for the meeting, be-
<br />ing no other nominations, it was a unanimous vote. 8:03 P. M.
<br />Selectman Mr. Trask moved to take up article two.
<br />tinder article 2, Mr. Mitchell, chairman of the Appropria-
<br />tion Committee, moved that the report of the Appropriation
<br />Committee, be accepted and placed on file, unanimous 8:04
<br />P. M.
<br />Mr. Mitchell spoke further on the reduction of salaries of
<br />the employees of the Town, stating he was opposed to same,
<br />although some members of the Appropriation Committee were
<br />in favor of a reduction, therefore, he offered the following
<br />motion:
<br />VOTED: That it is the sense of this meeting that the
<br />salaries of all town employees, except day laborers, should be
<br />reduced by ten per cent beginning July 1, 1932, and that the
<br />proper town officials so far as permitted by law, should take
<br />the necessary steps to carry this vote into effect.
<br />30 ANNUM. REPORTS
<br />Selectman Mr. Trask, speaking for the Selectmen, stated
<br />they were opposed to any reduction in Salaries.
<br />Mr. James Stuart Smith, of the School Committee, gave
<br />a lengthy talk, against any reductions in salaries, of the
<br />Teachers.
<br />Mr. Francis E. Burke, spoke against any reductions, sante
<br />not being necessary, and at the same time, it would not be just
<br />to Town employees.
<br />Mr. Walter Beatty moved indefinite postponement.
<br />The motion as read, being declared lost, unanimously 8:29
<br />P. M.
<br />Selectman Mr. Trask moved to take up article 5.
<br />Art. 5. Voted: That the following amounts be appropri-
<br />ated and assessed for the current year :
<br />For the expenses of the Appropriation Committee $150.00
<br />—unanimous 8:30.
<br />For salaries and expenses of the Selectmen's Department
<br />(of which ,$250.00 is for the expenses of the Selectmen
<br />for 1932) $5,100.00—unanimous 8:31.
<br />For the salary and expenses of the Town Accountant (o!'
<br />which $3,000.00 is for salary) $3,175.00—unanimous
<br />8 :32.
<br />For the salary and expenses of the Town Treasurer (of
<br />which $700.00 is for salary) $1,140.00 — unanimous
<br />8 :33.
<br />For the salary and expenses of the Collector of Taxes (of
<br />which $2.100.00 is for salary) $5,240.00—unanimous
<br />8 :34.
<br />For the salary and expenses of the Board of Assessors (of
<br />which $1,000.00 is for salary of Assessors) £6,000.00
<br />—unanimous 8:35.
<br />Mr. Folger expressed the desire for more detailed explana-
<br />tion of the various items.
<br />Selectman Mr. Trask, answered same would be given, on
<br />any item as the meeting went along.
<br />For legal services (of which $1,000.00 is for the salary of
<br />the Town Counsel) $2,550.00—unanimous 8:36.
