TOWN OF LEXINGTON 25 <br />ART, 6. On motion of Albert H. Burnham it was <br />inanimously Voted, That the following amount be ap- <br />propriated and assessed for the current year for the support <br />of the poor at the Al:r,shouse, $1450.00. Vote passed at <br />7:57 P. M. <br />On motion of Albert H, Burnham, it 'was unanimously <br />at 7:59 P. M., "VOTED, that the following amount be an- <br />pronnirated and assessed for the current year for the support <br />of the outside poor, $8500.00. <br />Under this article it was unanimously voted, on motion <br />of Albert II. Burnham, that, the following amounts be ap- <br />propriated and assessed for the current year: <br />For the Maintenance and care of highways $45000.00 <br />For the expense of street lights 14300.00 <br />For the expenses of the Appropriation Committee 150.00 <br />For the maintenance of public parks 4000.00 <br />For the salary and expenses of the Town Engineer 7152.00 <br />For the salary and expenses of Milk Inspector 250.00 <br />For the salary of Plumbing Inspector 500.00 <br />For the salary,- of Inspector of Slaughtering 200.00 <br />For the construction and repair of street signs 300.00 <br />For the maintenance of cemeteries 1500.00 <br />For the maintenance and development of Westview <br />Cemetery 1000.00 <br />Under this item Edward Wood. member of the <br />Cemetery Committee,• offered an amendment that the ap- <br />propriation for cemeteries be $1800 instead of $1500. Mr. <br />Wood also ,stated that he did not believe the appropriation <br />for the Westview Cemetery was sufficient. <br />Elwyn G. Preston stated that he felt the Appropriation <br />Committee's recommendation should be upheld as he be- <br />lieved they were deliberate in their judgment. <br />Mr. Wood's motion to amend was lost and the original <br />motion as offered by Mr. Burnham was passed, <br />Under the item of salary of Slaughter Inspector. Daniel <br />J. O'Connell offered an amendment to substitute $600 for <br />`):200. Mr. O'Connell felt that the Slaughterers did not have <br />any assurance that they could continue in business. <br />Town Counsel, Edward C. Stone, explained that any <br />slaughterer may apply for Federal Inspection if their build- <br />ings are in proper condition, and there will be no expense <br />to the Town as it will be on the Federal Government. The <br />appropriation asked for is to pay the Slaughter Inspector <br />26 ANNUAL REPORT <br />for the end of the license term April 30, 1924. <br />Mr. O'Connell's motion to amend was lost by vote of <br />the meeting and the original motion as offered by Mr. <br />Burnham was passed. <br />On motion of Edward W. Taylor, Chief of Fire Depart- <br />ment, the following was unanimously passed: <br />"VOTED: That the sum of 520,600 be appropriated <br />and assessed for the current year for the support of the <br />Fire Department." <br />Edwin A. Bayley offered an amendment to substitute <br />$20,000, believing that the Chief should receive. no com- <br />pensation for services or use of his car. <br />Remarks were made by Fred H. Moulton. Edwin W. <br />Hutchinson, Patrick Flynn, and Edward P. Merriam in <br />favor of fir. Taylor's motion. <br />Edwin A. Bayley's motion was lost by vote of the <br />meeting, and Mr. Taylor's motion passed. <br />1Hr. Burnham offered the following motion: "VOTED, <br />that the following amount be appropriated and assessed <br />for the celebration of April 19th, to be expended under the <br />direction of the Selectmen, $300.00. <br />Ezra F. Breed, Chairman of the April 19th Committee, <br />offered an amendment to substitute $500,00 and explained <br />that the expenditures last year were more than $299.96 as <br />shown by the Appropriation Committee report owing to <br />the subscription received. <br />It was voted unanimously to accept the amendment, <br />and the original motion as amended was passed. <br />ART. 7. On motion of Albert H. Burnham, it was <br />unanimously, "Voted, that the following amounts be appro- <br />priated and assessed for the current year: <br />For the administration of public trusts 75.00 <br />For the expenses of the Board of Assessors 3200.00 <br />For the payment of the amount to become due <br />during the current year upon the judgment <br />against the town obtained by Mary Chisholm <br />for the death of Daniel Chisholm, her <br />husband. 520.00 <br />For the salary of the Dog Officer 50.00 <br />
