WHITAKER, <br />Selectmen. <br />REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON THE TAKING OF <br />LAND AT EAST LEXINGTON FOR A LOCATION <br />FOR A NEW SCHOOLHOUSE <br />1..EXINGTON, September 14, 1911. <br />To THE CITIZENS OF LEXINGTON <br />The committee appointed under an article in the warrant for a <br />town meeting held April 29, 1911, to investigate and report to the <br />town in reference to a suitable location, and plans for a new gram- <br />mar school building to be located in East Lexington, respectfully <br />submit their first report as to a location. <br />The committee, after viewing several locations, were of unanitnous <br />opinion that the tract of land in the rear and adjoining the property <br />of the Fallen church and property of the town on which stands the <br />Stone Building was the most suitable for the purposes desired, and <br />immediately took steps to secure an option of the same. Owing to <br />the unfortunate illness of the owner, Miss Ellen A. Stone, much <br />delay has been encountered. Finally, after several interwiews with <br />Miss Stone and her agent, Mr. William H. Ballard, a price meeting <br />the approval of the committee has not been obtained, and we there- <br />fore now recommend that a taking in fee as provided in Sections <br />47, 48 and 49, Chapter 25 of the Revised Laws, be made under <br />93 <br />Articles 5 and 6 of the Town Warrant for a meeting to be held <br />Sept. 15, 1911. <br />DWIGHT F. SWAN, <br />Town Clerk. <br />REPORT OF THE SELECTMEN ON THE LAYING OUT <br />AND ACCEPTANCE OF HAYES AVENUE AND <br />SOMERSET ROAD AS PUBLIC WAYS <br />SUBMITTED AT TOWN MEETING OCTOBER 19, 1911 <br />LEXINGTON, MASS., Oct. 11, 1911. <br />The Selectmen respectfully report to the town the laying out by <br />them as public streets or ways, the same being known as Hayes <br />avenue and Somerset road. Each of these streets is laid out to a <br />width of fifty feet. <br />Hayes avenue, leading from Hancock street, near the residence <br />of Edward C. Graves, runs in an easterly by north-easterly direction <br />across land now or late of the Hayes estate for a distance of <br />approximately 1375 feet to Merriam street. <br />Somerset road leads from Hayes avenue about 350 feet from <br />Hancock street, also across the Hayes estate, in a south-westerly <br />by south-easterly direction to Merriam street, a distance of about <br />1490 feet. Near its junction with Hayes avenue it divides and <br />passes round on either side, an oval parcel of land, or might be <br />94 <br />
