<br />The average attendance at the main library during the afternoon
<br />was 140 daily.
<br />Average number at the branch, 26.
<br />At the main library the reading tables were supplied with one
<br />weekly and one daily paper; thirteen weekly, thirty monthly and
<br />three quarterly periodicals.
<br />From the Library Art Club nine exhibits were held, viz.: Alaska,
<br />49 photographs; Munich, 85 ; National Gallery, London, 100 ;
<br />Orvieto, 60 : Salisbury, 60 ; Siena, 83 ; Early Venice, 82; New
<br />Zealand, 100 ; California, 85.
<br />JUVENH,E DEPARTMENT.
<br />This department numbers 2,037 volumes, of which 98 were added
<br />during the year.
<br />Bookmarks, on which are printed lists of good books, were issued
<br />for the children. Six different colors form a set — the color being
<br />a guide to the class, thus : red, for books about our own country,
<br />blue, for books about foreign countries ; yellow, for books about
<br />famous people; green, for books about birds, animal and nature
<br />stories; white, for poetry and story books; orange, for myths, fairy
<br />tales and legends.
<br />Since the opening of the juvenile department in 1897 no books
<br />have been found missing from its shelves.
<br />MISCELLANEOUS.
<br />During the month of July the library was given a thorough clean-
<br />ing, after which it was examined and no books were found to be
<br />missing.
