11 <br />WARRANT FOR A TOWN MEETING. <br />MONDAY, MARCH 7, 1898. <br />To WILLIAM B. FOSTER, Constable of Lexington, GREETING : <br />Jn the name of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, you are <br />hereby required to notify and warn the inhabitants of the town <br />of Lexington, qualified by law to vote in town affairs, to assem- <br />ble at the Town Hall on Monday, the 7th day of March, A. D. <br />1898, at 7 o'clock A. M., to act on the following articles, viz.: <br />ART. 1. To choose a moderator to preside at said meeting. <br />Mr. H. W. Lewis moved that the polls for choice of mod- <br />erator be kept open ten minutes, which was amended by <br />Mr. G. W. Sampson to make the time thirty minutes. On <br />the amendment of Mr. Sampson it was declared not a vote, <br />which was doubted by 7 voters and was verified by count ; 63 <br />voting in favor and 70 against. <br />The motion for keeping the polis open ten minutes was <br />then carried and the polls declared open. The Chair ap- <br />pointed Geo. H. Cutter and Henry W. Lewis, who were <br />sworn to the faithful discharge of their duties as tellers to <br />assist in receiving and counting ballots. Subsequently the <br />time for keeping the polls open was extended fifteen minutes <br />and at close of polls it was found that 182 ballots had been <br />cast, which agreed with the number of names checked on <br />voting list, of which 82 were for Hiram G. Janvrin and 100 <br />for George W. Sampson, who was declared elected moder- <br />ator, and sworn to the faithful discharge of duty, by the <br />town clerk. <br />12 <br />ART. 2. To choose by ballot the following town officers <br />one town clerk, three selectmen, who shall also be overseers of <br />the poor and surveyors of highways; three assessors, one town <br />treasurer, one collector of taxes, two auditors, two constables, <br />all for the term of one year ; one member of the school commit- <br />tee for the term of three years ; one member of the cemetery <br />committee for the term of three years; one member of the board <br />of health for the term of three years; one member of the loard <br />of water commissioners for the term of three years ; a board of <br />sewerage commissioners of three members, one for one year, one <br />for two years, and one for three years. <br />ART. 3. To see if the town will vote for or against•granting- <br />licenses for the sale of intoxicating liquors in answer to the <br />question : "Shall licenses be granted for the sale of intoxicat- <br />ing liquors in this town?" The vote on the above question <br />shall be by ballot, "Yes" or "No." <br />Thb election officers will receive votes under Articles 2 <br />and 3 on the official ballot prepared by the town clerk. <br />The polls will be opened as scion as possible after the <br />organization of the meeting and will be kept open until five <br />o'clock P. M. <br />ARTS. 2 and 3. Abram B. Smith and Charles W. Swan, <br />who had been appointed ballot clerks by the selectmen, were <br />sworn, and receipted to the town clerk for a sealed package <br />said to contain 750 ballots for use of male voters and 104 <br />ballots for use of female voters, also a copy of the check <br />lists for male and female voters. Albern S. Chatfield and <br />Christopher S. Ryan were appointed deputy ballot clerks <br />and duly sworn by the moderator. <br />The ballot box was shown to be empty, then locked, and <br />the key thereof delivered to William B. Foster, the consta- <br />ble in attendance, and the polls were declared open and the <br />balloting commenced. <br />
