19 <br />Voted, That the list as amended be accepted. <br />ART. 4. Voted, That this article be before the town for <br />action thereon when no other business is being done. <br />On motion of Rev. C. A. Staples it was <br />Voted, That on the recommendation of the trustees of <br />Cary Library, the library be kept open every evening ex- <br />cepting Sundays, the hours being from 2 to 8 o'clock, P. M., <br />every day excepting Saturday, and on Saturday from 2 to 9 <br />o'clock, P. M., and that one hundred dollars be added to the <br />appropriation for pay of librarians. <br />Voted, That the surn of thirteen hundred ($1300) dollars <br />be appropriated and assessed for payment of librarians. <br />Mr. J. F. Hutchinson, for the committee on building <br />Grant street under the railroad, called upon Mr. E. A. <br />Bayley, who had some information from the railroad com- <br />pany, who said that the town must make the first move and <br />make the petition to the railroad, and it was <br />Voted, That the board of selectmen be authorized and in- <br />structed to take the necessary legal steps for doing away <br />with the present grade crossing on Grant street, and for the <br />construction of an. underpass on said street, connecting Mas- <br />sachusetts avenue with Sherman street. <br />ART. 6. To see if the town will make an appropriation for <br />the proper observance of Memorial Day under the direction of <br />Post 119, G. A. R. <br />On motion of Mr. G. H. Cutter it was <br />20 <br />Voted, That the sum of one hundred and seventy-five <br />($175) dollars be appropriated and assessed for the observ- <br />ance of Memorial Day and that the same be paid over to the <br />quartermaster of George G. Meade Post 119, G. A. R. <br />ART. 7. To see if the town will make an appropriation for <br />the proper observance of April 19, 1898, under the direction of <br />a committee of the Lexington Historical Society. <br />On motion of Mr. C. M. Parker it was <br />Voted, That the sum of two hundred ($200) dollars be ap- <br />propriated and assessed for the observance of April 19, <br />1898, under the direction of a committee of the Lexington <br />Historical Society. <br />ART. 8. To provide for the support of the public schools the <br />ensuing year, and grant money for the same. <br />Mr. Alfred Pierce, chairman of the school committee, <br />moved the sum of eighteen thousand five hundred ($18,500) <br />dollars in addition to the unexpended balance of two hundred <br />and sixty-six and seventy-seven one -hundredths ($266.77) <br />dollars, and stated that the state inspector had ordered the <br />Adams and High school buildings to be better ventilated and <br />lighted. Some discussion ensued on the amount, but it was <br />finally. <br />Voted, That the sum of eighteen thousand seven hundred <br />and sixty-six and seventy-seven one -hundredths ($18,766.77) <br />dollars be appropriated, of which the sum of eighteen thousand <br />five hundred ($18,500) dollars be assessed, for the support of <br />schools the ensuing year. <br />
