REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES OF THE <br />CARY LIBRARY. <br />The number of volumes now in the library is 8,151. <br />The number added during the past year is ,509, of <br />which 72 were given. The number of volumes taken <br />out during the year is 25,827 ; an increase of more than <br />twenty-five per cent. in five years. At the annual <br />examination in July, the library was found to be in <br />good condition. Three volumes were missing. <br />The trustees gratefully acknowledge the continued <br />benefactions of Mr. George W. Robinson, whose gift <br />of$25, in January, 1883, will be expended, as hitherto, <br />in the purchase of books of special value. <br />Mr. J. L. Norris has presented a framed photo- <br />graph of the old Daniel Harrington house. Mrs. B. <br />F. Brown has given a Proclamation of Governor <br />Pownall, appointing Thursday, the twenty-fifth of <br />October, 1759, as a day of public thanksgiving for the <br />capture of Quebec. <br />Dr. Robert M. Lawrence has given a framed pho- <br />tograph of the old Lawrence homestead in Lexington, <br />and also a tax -collector's warrant, dated Lexington, <br />1777. Mr. C. S. Parker has given a copy of the <br />.7frJ note -.flan for 1881. Mr. G. W. Berry has given <br />a Chinese newspaper. <br />28 <br />Of the books and pamphlets presented to the lib- <br />rary during the year, the United States Government <br />has given 34; Miss Mary Stevens, 12; G. W. Robin- <br />son, 9; E. G. Porter, 3; G. D. Scull, Samuel A. <br />Green and George F. Hoar, 2 each; and the follow- <br />ing persons one each: Joshua B. Holden, Levi Pros- <br />ser, Clinton Viles, Howard P. Arnold, James F. <br />Hunnewell, Q. P. Index, Miss Mary R Hudson, Mrs. <br />B. F. Brown and the Smithsonian Institution. <br />Four new book -cases have been added, at an ex- <br />pense of $175.00, to meet the increasing demand for <br />shelf accommodation. <br />The library -room has been enlarged by removing <br />a portion of the walls, so as to include within its area <br />the adjoining Memorial Hall. The statues and tab- <br />lets can thus be seen to better advantage; and the <br />library itself, with its enlarged space, decorated <br />walls, and improved facilities for Lighting, heating <br />and reading, will be more than ever the ornament and <br />pride of the Town. <br />These improvements were made at an expense of <br />$1,000, under the direction of a special committee <br />appointed by the Town. <br />EDWARD G.
