In attendance were
Lauren MacNeil, Director of Social Services,
Selectman Bill Kennedy, Jennifer Wolfrum, Coordinator of Health Education, Elaine Sterzin, Director of
Grants of Planning, Sheila Butts, Associate Recreation Director, Bill Blout, member of the Human Services
Committee, Arnie Berger, psychologist, Helen Cohen, from the School Committee, Beth Ribeiro, Outreach
Social Worker/Guidance, and Leanne Mottola, Guidance Counseling Intern.
Following introductions and welcoming, I spoke about what I've been doing since I begin on the 13th of
September; for instance, getting into the school systems, meeting with community people, exploring the
strengths and what already exists within Lexington, really just connecting with others. I also mentioned
that some haven't heard of my position and Helen mentioned possibly using the Minuteman to get the
information out there. Elaine also mentioned using Jane Franks to help get me into the private schools.
Jennifer talked about changing the time of our meeting so that the students can attend regularly without a
conflict with the school day. Jennifer will set up a room in high school and confirm with me. While Elaine
will research into who??? are the two students who have been nominated and I will then follow-up.
Lauren spoke about the council serving as a resource and also a working group to achieve our tasks and
goals, once established. Elaine was going to look further into the Metro Southwest Regional Employment
Board grant and talk with AIM and other school folks about it's prospects. This would be an example of
how, we as the Youth Council, would work together to achieve outcomes.
Bill started to address the need to include the youth, hear their voices about what is happening and what
they need/want. We spoke about setting up youth forums, to be held at the high school, informally,
possibly with the help of the two students on our council, as part of their role and this gathering can serve
as a needs assessment.
Also mentioned was funding?? It's time to begin thinking about it...We know we need food:)
Helen and Beth both spoke about the clergy association and Beth mentioned how wonderful they were
during times of unease and grief. It was mentioned as a possiblity to have someone from the clergy
association serve on our council. We will have to re-visit this in next meeting along with funding, and
setting our goals for year.
Mark your calendars:
Next meeting Tuesday October 26, 2004 2:30-3:30pm at LHS. ,, '
Tuesday November 23, 2004 2:30-3:30pm at LHS. ° ,' °
Tuesday December 21, 2004 2:30-3:30pm at LHS. t< 'v.
s` 1
I will e-mail at a later date once the room is confirmed. 4 v
Thank you everyone for attending.
