MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES IN LEXINGTON <br /> 1.PURPOSES <br /> The Human Services Committee study of professional mental health service providers began <br /> to take shape in 2001,when representatives of the Middlesex branch of the National <br /> Alliance for the Mentally Ill met with the committee to present their current needs and <br /> concerns. We decided to conduct a study of the services available in Lexington for citizens, <br /> including children and youth, of the town. <br /> Our primary purpose was to inform ourselves and the Board of Selectman about the <br /> nature, extent, and levels of activity of all types of mental health services by Lexington <br /> agencies and solo practitioners. We sought to identify and describe the availability and <br /> provision of psychotherapeutic, sociotherapeutic, counseling, and medical services to clients <br /> suffering from psychoses, psychoneuroses, related cognitive or emotional distress, and <br /> difficulties associated with alcoholism, substance abuse, and the like. Our aim was to gather, <br /> interpret, and report on evidence of unmet needs. We believed that subgroups who were found to <br /> be under-served should be identified and that the Board of Selectman would entertain ways of <br /> strengthening the scope and quality of future services. <br />
