Whereas: dornestic violence is a systematic pattern of power and cantrol perpetrated by one intunate partner against
another,which includes,but is not limited to:intimidation,physical assault,battery,sexual assault,
threats,emotionaUpsychological abuse or other abusive behavior;and
Whereas: in the United States,an average af 20 peaple experience intimate partner physical vialence every minute
which equates to mare than 10 million abuse victims annually;and
Whereas: c�f those victims,nearly 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men have experienced severe physical violence by an
intirnate partner in their lifetimes;and
Whereas. too often,domestic violence touches the lives of children leaving a devastating impact and lifelong
repercussions from the emotional and physical trauma;and
Whereas: anyone can be a victim of domestic violence regardless of age,race,sex,ability,ethnicity,sexual
orientation,sacioecanomic status,or religion;and
Whereas; in 2419,a Lexington waman died as a result of domestic violence;and
Whereas: domestic violence remains a major public health,social justice,and human rights issue requiring
particular attention,and its interventions must be with the inclusion of all people at all levels;and
Whereas: raising awazeness during the month of October provides us with a special opportunity for citizens to learn
more about prevention,show support for the numeraus arganizations and individuals who provide critical
services,as well as advance Lexington's effarts to prevent and end domestic violence;and
Whereas: it is important to nate that one person can make a huge difference in the life of a child or an adult victim
of damestic violence,helping them find safety and making them mare resilient ta the effects of domestic
violence.
NOW, THEREFQRE, WE, TI�E SELECT BUARU of the Town of Lexingtan,Massachusetts,do hereby proclaim the
month af October to be annually recognized as
l3omest�'c Vinlenee Awareness Munth
in the Town of Lexington as we work together to eliminate domestic violence fram our comrnunity.
