SITE COUNCIL 10/25/13 <br />ATTENDANCE: Lynnette Allen, Nimisha Asthagiri, Russ Bosbach, Angela Chang, <br />Meg Collela, Betsy Conway, Naomi Priver, Deb Sabin, Deidre Schadler, Debbi Side <br />Guests: Lucia Gates, Susan Kingsbury <br />1.CYBER- LITERACY -- Lucia Gates and Lynnette Allen <br />1.COMMON SENSE MEDIA.ORG <br />2. last year did curriculum for 3 -5th grade <br />1.parents monitoring cell phone use, email but by and large children not <br />using email <br />2.chat rooms attached to games is what is problem <br />1.kids don't know what it means, who may be on the chat room <br />board <br />2.parents don't know about these, don't monitor, not paying <br />attention to that <br />3.talk last year to school guidance counselors <br />1.says predators not most likely problem but peer bullying <br />2.if want a speaker may be able to get her to come <br />4. talk about log -in, what information to put in, what is private /public <br />5.1ast year was a pilot program at Bridge and Hastings, have to follow -up <br />now and see what will implement <br />6.can parrot back about stranger danger, but unaware of peer troubles <br />1.a few years ago trouble with 5th grade chat room for homework <br />evolves into who was cool enough to stay on <br />2.permanence of what is posted on Facebook, email <br />3.no true privacy (kids are innocent and are amazed about it) <br />3.may expand this year <br />1.Lynnette thinks is too young to introduce to K -2, but parents should be <br />aware of and talk about at home <br />2. ?add social literacy to 2nd grade; already do in Open Circle <br />4.social behavior on line, need to apply what they have learned in Open Circle/ <br />Responsive classroom <br />1.haven't sent home in a while material from Open Circle, may be good to <br />send home and have parents <br />5.sent letter home to parents last year of 3 -5th graders <br />6.whole idea of instagram and pictures, what online profile people have, face <br />recognition; colleges and prospective employers google and has impact on <br />admission /hiring <br />2. PTA COFFEES (tend to have 3 -4 a year) <br />1.Nov 14th (Thurs) -- LITERACY Laura Broche and Jessica Cabriolet, just <br />reading then in spring to do writing <br />2.will have emergency topic as indicated <br />3.can have social media literacy <br />
