Paul Callahan reported that he has been pushing for more "officers on
bicycles" presence in Lexington. There are four mountain bikes being used
in police law enforcement. Twenty officers have been trained in the
"COBWEB" program, and all new employees receive this training. He said
that state grant money used to pay for Bikeway patrols, which is why the
Bikeway is patrolled less often now.
• Richard Canale reported on the center parking committee.
Other Business: The committee discussed the recent email exchanges on the
Bike Lexington Yahoo list about Bikeway behavior as well as the John Allen video
that demonstrates dangerous behavior on the Bikeway. Mike said that we should
be targeting behavior, not making rules about who can and can't use the bikeway.
Carolyn suggested that club riders be reminded to match their speed to the
conditions around them. Richard said that the Town should improve in general the
job of telling drivers, cyclists, and walkers what to do.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 pm.
Record of the Discussions of the Friends of Lexington Bikeways
Treasurer's Report: $200 was received from Temple Isaiah.
Farmers' Market Bike Corral: August saw a low turnout because of the
inaccurate weather forecast. It was suggested that signs be posted over by
Bikeway to make sure that riders can see that there is a bike corral.
Garfield Street Access Project: An Eage scout candidate is doing the project,
scheduled for late September.
