HomeMy WebLinkAbout2013-09-10-2020-min (Demographic Change Subcommittee)Town of Lexington Subcommittee on Demographic Change Minutes of the meeting held on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 Ellen Stone Room, Cary Hall Present: Pat Costello, Margaret Heitz, Nirmala Garimella, Martin Hwang, Bhumip Khasnabish, Peter Lee, Susie Lee - Snell, Dan Krupka The meeting was called to order at 7:35 p.m. The minutes of the meeting held on August 13, 2013 were approved. Action items • Send the section on the English Language Learner Program to Robyn Dowling -Grant for her review and with a request to provide additional data and clarification — Dan • Complete Brookline entry for Table 5 by investigating its web site — Martin • Complete Cambridge entry for Table 5 by investigating its web site — Susie • Complete Winchester entry for Table 5 by investigating its web site — Dan • Prepare a list of events and actions to increase the community's inclusion of Asian Americans to be included in the recommendations section for "Barriers" — Nirmala and Peter • Prepare a list of Korean churches in Lexington — Susie • Send comments on Rev 2.1 to Dan —Albert, Bhumip, Martin, Nancy, Nirmala, Peter, Susie Decisions • The report will recommend a twice - yearly meeting on the topic of working with a diverse Asian population. Suggested participants: Police, Fire, Human Services, Library, CAAL and IAL. • Pat will join Albert, Dan, Nirmala and Susie in the meeting with Bob Harris on September 24. • To improve the readability of the report, we will add headers with short section titles, a list of tables and a list of figures. • The next version of the report, to be completed after the meeting with Bob Harris, will be circulated to the following: Fernando Quezada, Marian Cohen, Leslie Zales and, possibly Jeanne Krieger (Action Items) at the same as it's being circulated to the Subcommittee. • We will issue a press release after formally presenting the report to the 2020 Vision Committee at its December 13 meeting. Margaret will draft the press release. • We endorsed the concept of stimulating the publication, in local media, of a series of profiles of Asian residents who illustrate the progress being made in Lexington and would help to stimulate greater participation. Ideally, the articles would begin running after a presentation to the Board of Selectmen. Nancy has the lead on this. Next Meeting Our next meeting: Tuesday, October 8 in the Ellen Stone Room in Cary Hall. The meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m. Minutes submitted by Dan Krupka
