REPORT <br />ON THE <br />TOWN OFFICERS <br />OF THE <br />TOWN OF LEXINGTON; <br />FOR THE <br />YEAR ENDING JAN. 31, 1875. <br />ARLINGTON: <br />OFFICE OF THE "LEXINGTON MINUTE -MAN." <br />1875. <br /> <br />REPORT OF THE SELECTMEN ON THE <br />AFFAIRS OF THE TOWN. <br />LEXINGTON, FEB. 10, 1875. <br />Agreeably to usage and the vote of the town, the Select- <br />men submit n general statement, to their fellow citizens, of <br />the affairs and fiscal condition of the town, together with a <br />statement of their own acts and doings. <br />In relation .to *lir doings tinder the authority of the <br />Drainage Act of 18r3, they would simp'y say, that in their <br />last report they stated that the early setting in of whiter <br />prevented the completion of their contemplated work upon <br />the meadows. In May hist we viewed the premises, and <br />decided what further should he clone. We found on exam- <br />ination that the dr.rins had accomplished all that was antici- <br />pated, showing a marked improvement in the condition of <br />the meadows. The banks of the drains had stood the trial <br />of the first winter, which is generally the severest trial to <br />which such work is exposed, as well as could have been ex - <br />petted. We ordered the extension of some of the side <br />drtri.r.s so as to relieve certain portions of the meadows from • <br />nater, agreeably to the plan originally adopted. %Ve also <br />examined the meadows carefully in September last, bef'oro <br />apportioning the betterment tax; and from hath examina- <br />tions, and from what we saw ill the course of the reason, we <br />were fully satisfied that the general improvement of these <br />meadows, and the lauds immediately contiguous, would ulti- <br />mately more than repay the cost of draining. We found <br />land which was a mere hog the year before, ton wet for any <br />kind of cniture, reclaimed, and under a high state of culti- <br />vation ; and finally seeded down to English grass, with a <br />
