DRAINAGE REPORT. <br />LEXINGTON, FEB. 2D, 1874.' <br />The Selectmen, acting as a Board in the execution of the <br />provisions of the statute of April 19, 1873, authorizing them <br />to drain the Meadows near the Central Village, ask leave to <br />present the following <br />REPORT. <br />As the subject is somewhat novel in its character, and by <br />many appears to be misapprehended, we feel culled upon to <br />make a report more full, than would be necessary under <br />other circumstances. The subject of drainage, like most <br />other 'important subjects, came before the town gradually. <br />Complaints were made from time to time, of the flowing of <br />water over certain portion of the Highway ; and the partial <br />relief given by the Surveyors, failed to satisfy the public. <br />When these complaints assumed a tangible form, and became <br />urgent, the following Article was inserted in a warrant for a <br />Town Meeting—" To see if the Town will choose a Com- <br />mittee to take into consideration the subject of drains and <br />.sewerage in Lexington ; and report at a future meeting." <br />Under this Article the town at a lemal meeting, voted, <br />"That a Committee of three. be appointed to take into con- <br />sideration the subject if Common Sewers, and the draining <br />of Streets, Swamps, and Ilfeadhws in the different parts of <br />the town, so far as it relates to the convenient use of the <br />Highways, and the health of the inhabitants ; and the said <br />Committee are authorized in their discretion, to employ a <br />competent surveyor or engineer, to take such levels as may <br />be necessary to test the practicability of draining in any <br />particular case ; and the said Committee shall report the <br />
