The minutes of April 18, 2013, were accepted as written. The minutes of November 29, 2012 were accepted as corrected. Bathroom project — Brian Kelley reported that he has a shortfall of $40,000. LexFun is doing a drive with their members. He has not yet received a donation from Little League but has an individual who may help. Youth Soccer donated $30,000; Youth Lacross donated $20,000; Roma Tile of Watertown will give $1,000. Publicity is needed — a pamphlet that he can hand out. He will work with Doug Lucente on this. He would like someone to do an OpEd or article for the newspaper and put something on Patch. He is still aiming at July 4 if the money comes in.. The question was asked about cleaning the bathrooms. This will be done by the Town Facilities Department staff. Hank Manz will follow up about the cleaning. Time locks have been discussed with DPW. New Signs Wes Wirth showed the committee the frames designed by Fossil Industries that he would recommend. There was discussion about the mounting instructions, size — 32" by 46" — and angle 45 degrees. Bob Pressman moved to purchase the signs and metal pedestals ( #3488) at a cost not to exceed $3,500. Brian Kelley seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. New Plantings — Vanessa Tropeano presented the new plant list and plan. Lynne Wilson moved to accept the proposal (attached). Brian Kelley seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. All four areas will be planted the first week of June. The irrigation at the park has not been turned on. Bob Pressman offered to water a magnolia that Wilson Farm had planted which needed water. Invasive Plant Management — Miles Connors presented a proposal for management. David Williams will take this to Conservation. Miles will try to go with him. Granite Forest— Wes Wirth is still waiting for a price from McCullough. He will also get a price from a New Hampshire mason that he knows. Lynne asked if Bob Barnard could give the committee a price to widen the path along Worthen Road. Vanessa will talk to him. David mentioned that the swamp oaks at the bike path entrance on Worthen did not look healthy. Wes Wirth said that the donated spruce trees from Christmas are now in the Town nursery and will remain there until we are ready to plant. The next meeting was scheduled for June 6 at 4:30. Goals of the project include the control of invasive plant material by following guidelines prepared by Wesley Wirth and company Managing the Invasive Vegetation in Lincoln Park (2008), while encouraging native plant conservation and establishment. This proposal includes working in conjunction with the Lincoln Park Committee, Wesley Wirth at Thomas Wirth Associates and the Town of Lexington Conservation Commission to manage plant communities in Lincoln Park. Invasive Plant Management Techniques: Manual methods of hand pulling and cutting is always preferred over herbicide treatments. Alliaria petiolata, Garlic Mustard To reduce disturbance to soils with seed bank, spot foliar application of 2% Glyphosate is recommended. Cardimine impatients Treat with foliar application along the boardwalk up to 20 feet in with 2% Glyphosate "Rodeo" TM to reduce disturbance to the soils. Allium spp., Wild Onion Grass Recommended control includes foliar applications in June and repeated in November to approximately 5000 square feet. One characteristic that makes control difficult is it has a thin, glossy leaf which herbicides don't readily adhere, so weed wacking before application increases surface area and increases effectiveness of control. Rosa multiflora, Multiflora Rose For plants to large for manual pulling methods, cut and wipe the stem with a 25% concentration of Glyphosate `Rodeo'. Herbicides used in natural areas can be highly controversial and many people are concerned when an herbicide application is prescribed as part of a habitat restoration plan. We therefore appreciate the opportunity to provide some background information in order to help interested parties make informed decisions about the use of herbicides. At Parterre Ecological, our philosophy is to use herbicides as infrequently as possible. Physical methods such as hand pulling, up rooting, or repeat cutting is the preferred method of removal. However, we also know from experience that certain plant species are so aggressive through biological means that herbicides are necessary in order to fully eradicate them. When we determine that herbicide should be used, we strive to use techniques that minimize the amount of herbicide and reduce the potential of non - target damage. We use herbicides at low rates and follow the Massachusetts Sensitive Areas materials List ( htty)://www.mass.gov/ag/pestic.i.des/rightofway/index.htm ). We also follow the Massachusetts Invasive Plant Advisory Group (MIPAG) to determine which plants are considered invasive, likely invasive, potentially invasive, or currently not meeting criteria. htt /mipag/ Parterre Ecological has licensed and insured Massachusetts Pesticide Applicators. All Applicators must attend workshops and study materials in order to pass a written exam to become licensed in the state. Additionally, applicators must obtain educational credits each year through attending additional courses in order to maintain licenses.
