HomeMy WebLinkAbout2013-02-15-2020-minTown of Lexington Lexington 2020 Vision Committee Minutes of Meeting of February 15, 2013 A meeting of the 2020 Vision Committee was held on Friday, February 15 at 7:45 a.m. in the Selectmen's Meeting Room in the Town Office Building at 1625 Massachusetts Avenue. Members Present: Fernando Quezada, Jane Warren, Dan Krupka, Andrew Dixon Staff: Candy McLaughlin, Michelle Stevens Members Absent: Alan Wrigley, Peter Lee, Bhumip Khasnabish, Marian Cohen, Chuck Benson, Peter Enrich, Greg Zurlo George Burnell, Margaret Coppe Others present: Carroll Ann Bottino Action Items: • The Committee will continue publicity efforts for the community survey, which has been extended to March 6tn The meeting acted on the following items: The Committee approved the minutes from January 18, 2013. Reviewed progress of subcommittee on demographic change: The Committee approved the membership appointments for the subcommittee, now totaling ten members. Dan said the subcommittee is interviewing 30 Asian Americans serving on Town Boards /Committees and Parent Teacher Associations/ Organizations. He said there are two aspects to the interview. The participant first receives a consent letter, a demographic questionnaire and a more general questionnaire regarding their involvement in Town. Secondly, a member of the subcommittee interviews the participant. Dan said there are a variety of questions, including: • How the participant got started in Town • Benefits of participating in Town affairs; affairs; • How the Town can encourage broader • Barriers the participant encountered in the participation. process; He said the subcommittee's goal is to finish the interviews by the end of March and the whole report by the end of the calendar year. Dan said it does not seem that other Towns are investigating this question. He said he would like to consider entering this project in the Massachusetts Municipal Association's Innovation Awards. Candy said the Town Manager agreed, but it is premature because the subcommittee doesn't have any results yet. The Committee agreed. Discussed community survey: Dan said 878 people have responded to the survey, which is approximately 4% of residents in Lexington over the age of 18. He distributed two graphs (attached), one being the age distribution of respondents and the other being race of the respondents. Dan said Chinese and Koreans are underrepresented, as well as senior citizens and young adults. Therefore, he said the Committee should reach out to the Chinese American Association of Lexington and the Senior Center. The Committee decided to extend the survey deadline by two weeks, making the new deadline March 6tn Committee members will continue the publicity efforts. The Committee thanked George Burnell for his service as liaison from the Board of Selectmen.
