Town of Lexington
Subcommittee on Demographic Change
February 28, 2013
Dan Krupka, Chair of the Town of Lexington Subcommittee on Demographic Change, called the meeting
to order. The following subcommittee members were present: Dan Krupka, Chair, Nancy Corcoran
Ronchetti, Nirmala Garimella, Margaret Heitz, Albert Huang, Bhumip Khasnabish and Susie Lee - Snell.
Some members of the Committee were unable to attend due to scheduling conflicts.
Karen Simmons and Sheila Butts from the Town's Recreation Department were also present. After
introductions were made, Dan asked Karen and Sheila to give their presentation. It was very informative.
Some highlights include:
• Information on what the community is currently doing
• Information on full time staff, seasonal staff and volunteer staff
• Information on the various types of recreation programs that are currently available and how the
program has grown over time (i.e. from offering 300 programs to offering 530 programs); and 490
programs ran last year
• Fluctuations in enrollment and programs
• Information on adult and youth leagues
• Some examples of program offerings - tennis, aquatics, golf, fall flag football, ski program at Nashoba
Valley, boot camp
• Demographic information (where available)
• Recreation Program challenges
• Capital Projects scheduled for this year
• The Department's Strategic Plan (space is the biggest impediment to the program's expansion)
• Upcoming events (i.e., The Amazing Revolutionary Race to be held 5/9/13)
After the presentation, a group discussion followed. Several program offering suggestions were made
(i.e., Cricket and Bollywood Dancing) as well as a suggestion that language preference information be
added to the enrollment form.
Approval of Minutes
The minutes from the previous meeting were moved for approval. The minutes were unanimously
accepted.
Interview Recap
The group discussed perspectives /perceptions regarding interviews that have already been conducted.
Upcoming Interviews
The interview assignment list was reviewed and interviews will be scheduled over the next few weeks.
PTO's /PTA's
Dan will work on an interview guide for PTA's /PTO's. Suzie maintains a master PTA list and will add the
LEF information to it. She will also write up an article regarding volunteers.
Information Re: What Other Communities Are Doing
Pat Costello was unable to attend the meeting and will be asked to present her information at the next
meeting.
