HomeMy WebLinkAbout2012-06-08-2020-minTown of Lexington Lexington 2020 Vision Committee Minutes of Meeting of June 8, 2012 A meeting of the 2020 Vision Committee was held on Friday, June 8 at 7:45 a.m. in the Selectmen's Meeting Room in the Town Office Building at 1625 Massachusetts Avenue. A quorum of 8 was present. Members Present: Fernando Quezada, Jane Warren, Dan Krupka, Andrew Dixon, Bhumip Khasnabish, George Burnell, Marian Cohen, Margaret Coppe Staff: Candy McLaughlin, Michelle Stevens Public Present: Nancy Adler Members Absent: Chuck Benson, Peter Lee, Alan Wrigley, Peter Enrich Fernando said Janice Frascatore is unable to continue to serve on the Committee. The Committee thanked her for her participation. The meeting acted on the following items: The Committee approved the minutes from May 4, 2012. Discussed report from subcommittee to broaden Asian - American participation in local government: Dan said the subcommittee had their first meeting. He said their next steps are to meet with the Police and Fire Chiefs. Also, he said they are still looking for a volunteer from the Korean community to serve on the subcommittee. Marian asked if the Town departments provide cultural awareness training for employees. Candy said the Police Department is holding a panel for their staff on the topic of cultural and religious differences. Fernando said the Committee should be cognizant of respecting cultural differences when attempting to remove barriers. Dan said the subcommittee will present a more formal report to the 2020 Vision Committee at their July meeting. Discussed updated plans for community survey: Marian said the working group has not developed anything formal yet, but they are still aiming to distribute the survey in late fall or early winter. Candy said $10,000 is budgeted in FY 13 for the survey. Marian said it could fund an ad campaign or a mailing to raise awareness of the survey within the community. Continued discussion of what happens after 2020: Fernando asked the Committee if it's time to revise the Committee's charge. Candy said the 2020 date was chosen originally because it was 20 years out at the time. Marian said the Committee is valuable because they are the only Town committee that considers long -term goals for the community as a whole. She said the year 2020 should not be an ending point for the Committee. George said, although the Committee's purpose is long -term planning, the Committee should also review the Board of Selectmen's short-term goals developed annually, as well as the goals of the Planning Board and School Committee.
