2020 Vision Implementation Committee
June 10, 2005 – Meeting Minutes
7:45 a.m. Selectmen’s Meeting Room

Members Present
: Fernando Quezada, Ann Redmon, Marian Cohen, Stacey Hamilton, Scott Burson,
Richard Pagett
Others:
Candy McLaughlin, Elaine Sterzin, Kerry Evans

Minutes:
The minutes from the May 5, 2005, Implementation Committee meeting were approved.

Report on Discovery Day:
Fernando expressed thanks to Ann, Stacey, and Candy for all the hard work
they did getting everything together in such a short period of time. He also thanked the volunteers that
spent time working at the table. Ann reported, that while she wasn’t there all day so she’s not sure how
much traffic the table received, it went well. Fernando stated that he received some good curious
questions and thinks that just the Committee’s presence shows that they care about the community and
that this might allow the process to pick up some momentum. There was a survey available for people to
fill out and Candy stated that she would collect the data. Stacey reported that she didn’t think many
not
people filled out the surveys but she had quite a few discussions with people about why 2020 is an
implementation group. She also said that she had quite a few alumni come over and explain that they had
spent significant time and effort into 2020 activities but nothing ever happened.

Town Manager Orientation:
Candy mentioned that she has scheduled a meeting with the new Town
st
Manager on July 1 and would like to include some information on 2020. She will invite him to the next
meeting of 2020 but asked if the group had anything specific they would like her to include in her
st
meeting on the 1. It was suggested that the group try to get buy-in to the committee from the new Town
Manager but also see how this group will fit into his goals and values.

2020 as an implementation group:
From the discussions that people had at Discovery Day and also
from various members of the task forces, it was reported that one thing that comes up repeatedly is that
there is frustration regarding the lack of implementation surrounding 2020. While the group feels that
2020 is best serving the community by taking a longer view and not implementing, they worry about
losing momentum and good members, due to the fact that no group ends up implementing the good ideas.
Elaine suggested that maybe it was time for a reflection piece, outlining the where the group has come in
the last five years and what has been accomplished. The group decided that this would be good to bring
to the meeting with the new Town Manager.

It was suggested that, at least in terms of the community discourse group, that some of the suggestions of
that task force can be implemented without needing “official” government approval, such as community
gathering places. Marian, Stacey, and Ann plan on going back to their taskforce and look at what can be
done as a community without need the “official” town involvement.

Presentations to Elected Officials and TMMA:
Ann reported on her presentation to the School
Committee. Scott Burson commented that currently 2020 is dealing with issues that don’t directly
involve the schools but the group still has interest in the long-range planning focus of 2020.

th
Budget Taskforce:
The presentation/meeting at the BOS meeting on May 16 did not go as intended but
financial items and some of the recommendations of the task force will be featured prominently in the
BOS goal setting meeting this summer.

Community Discourse Taskforce:
This group will meet, not only to discuss the possibilities of
implementing some of the task force recommendations, but to plan the fall meeting and determine who
needs to be there.

1
